Cat 322BL overheating

Jeff Landrum ยท 2021-02-14 13:54

I have changed the thermostat, checked the belts and water is flowing through the radiator. It will run hot idleing in five minutes. It does not show compression in the radiator when idleing but will blow the water out when it gets hot enough Any help will be appreciated

What's the history of the machine and the history of the problem? that sounds quick, is there a hydraulic load on the engine at idle? First step with overheating is always use a non contact thermometer to take the temps of the block, head, inlet from the radiator, and thermostat housing going to the radiator, all when it's as hot as you dare get it, so when it first starts blowing water out of the radiator.

It has been running a few years without issue. Was left sitting in dirt pit couple months. Before starting fluids were checked. Ran hot (blew steam out)loadind the first load. First thought was thermostat but was not the problem. I checked the top of the engine and radiator and temp was 220. I come home to check manuals for a second thermostat but did not find anything.

I bet the bottom of the radiator and the water pump inlet were pretty close to 220 because the radiator is plugged full of dust. The temps will tell you what's going on, but you can check the simple stuff too, belt tight, fan turns tough if at all, can you see through the radiator with a light on the other side? does it look clean over the whole thing?

That has thermostat with valve plate on bottom. When you removed the "regulator", did all of it come out? And, did the new regulator have the valve plate on the bottom?
