Cat 322L Hydraulic oil showing up in coolant

J. Kon Diesel ยท 2018-06-22 17:21

A relative of mine picked up a Cat 322 L knowing that hydraulic oil was turning up in his cooling system. He figured it was the oil cooler and replaced it.. Now he's still losing oil and it still seems to be turning up in his cooling system.. Not sure if anyone here has seen this before.. Any help would be appreciated!!!

Well, since they never run parallel anywhere, including in the cooling stack, your hydraulic oil is going elsewhere. If there truly is "oil" in the cooling system, that 3116 has an oil to water cooler in the side of the engine block. Those gaskets typically last less than 7 years, on my machines.

3116 motor, dry flywheel housing, composite urethane/ magnesium coupler, hyd pump gp.

This might sound silly, but as we say over here, it doesn't cost anything to ask - are you / is the owner SURE that there's OIL in the coolant, and not FUEL...? The 3116 engine on the 322 has unit fuel injector pumps, which are pressed in some brass sleeves in the cylinder head. Those sleeves sometimes crack, and when they do, the symptom is diesel fuel contaminating the coolant. It's not extremely common, but it's a pretty well-known issue.
