Hi, a friend is renting a Cat 336 excavator from a large company while they are working nearby, just cleaning out the back of a pond. Part of the deal is to re-fuel it. Do these new machines require low-sulfer on road fuel or do they use old fashioned of road like all the other machines? He is worried about putting in the wrong stuff and cooking something. It is an almost new unit. Thanks alot
On road and off road fuel are both ultra low-sulfer, Only difference is the color.
Same sulfer content? I know the color difference was to prove that road tax was paid. Thanks
Yes same sulfer content.
How new ? My understanding is that it only really matters if its a Tier 4 Interim Emissions engine. Does it have exhaust aftertreatment (does it require regeneration?). If it does then the ultra low sulfur is required or else you start plugging the DOC and DPF and doing damage, but unless it is really new it won't have this and the fuel is not as critical.
336E requires ULSD and 336D/C does not.
We're up for buying some new 336 excavators soon. Obviously being brand new they will be E models. I'll be interested to see what Cat offers us bearing in mind the best fuel we can get hold of here is around 1500ppm of sulphur compared to ULSD @ 15ppm......
I'm assuming you are overseas and not subject to our rediculous EPA laws/BS. Hopefully they can hook you up with an export model with a non Tier 4 engine...
You are correct in your assumption that I am not based in the Continental US. I hope that they can offer us something "Export-only" otherwise we might be changing brands .....................
Any reports on fuel consumption on the Tier 4 Cats vs Tier 3? We are looking for a new 320RR. Only Tier 4 E series available... There are some nice upgrades in the E series, but fuel consumption concerns me
