Cat 943 – Hydraulics straining when using 4 in 1 bucket ram.

We have a Cat 943 with 4 in 1 bucket and when using 3rd service it appears to be straining the hydraulics, the ram only moves slowly and it doesn't matter if you move leaver abit or alot it doesn't go any faster just strains more. i put it down to a weeping wiper seal on one side, so took the ram off and got it fully resealed, but still doing the same. Now i've took off the other side and blanked the pipes, but it is still straining. Any ideas??

How do the rest of the hydraulics feel when using the 4 in 1? In other words, does the 4 in 1 operation affect the other bucket functions?

Sorry should of said that everything works together normally, hydraulics, tracks etc...just the 4 in 1. Could it be bad reseal? need second ram resealing and fitting? something else?

Right guys, Update on ram, stripped down and seals are like brand new, no scores, chips etc... in ram. So put back together and refitted to machine. Got interrupted by one of our retired guys who called to wish Happy Christmas, who say try blowing oil out of the pipes before connecting up, cause he once had a new rubber hydraulic pipe with a wooden dowel trapped in, and it would float up and down the pipe but restrict the oil flow. Seems a waste of good oil but it would check the valve block Anyway off to have a gallon or two of beer as it's MAD FRIDAY. ( last Friday before Christmas). Hangover cures on a postcard please.

If there is any sort of blockage in the lines you should see the line go like an iron bar when you try to operate the cylinder in question. Ideally you need 2 people for this, one to pull levers, the other to watch the hoses connected to the offending circuit. Try cycling the cylinder a few times with someone watching the lines, the symptoms are hard to miss. Also try disconnecting both cylinders from the bucket at the rod end and then cycling the hydraulics. Could it be your pivot on the 4-in-1 that's tight ..?

Does your machine have a valve to divert the third function to either 4-in-1 or scarifier? Even if you don't have a scarifier fitted, you may still have the change over valve with the scarifier ports blanked off. Check the valve isn't stuck between the two positions. You'll find the valve buried fairly deep in the machine, in the area at the back of the hydraulic tank. I think that to see it, you'll either have to lift the cab or remove the right-hand fender or take a belly plate off.

A big THANK YOU to Cmark, Went down to Track Loader today, took off lines and used 3 rd service, and oil dripped out, both sides the same. Thought about divert valve before which even though there are stickers in the cab for 3rd service there is only a hole(no lever), had a quick look under the cab only to see rod discontected, so though it was an extra service to rear. However, had another look and you were right as the stickers says up for ripper and for 4 in 1, then the 3rd leaver has stickers for both. So opened up sides and looked at rod, feels a little easy, followed down, and then found the problem, ball joint popped off the short rod to the valve block, 1 hr later up and running. So simple and no cost, but what a little bitch to do, right under the tank, and unless we removed the tank no access for big hands. Thanks again everyone and thanks again Cmark.
