CAT 953 LGP 20Z 3693 lost drive?

953 was working in the morning, dropped of at shop for wear plate replacement on the bucket.. unloaded, parked, engine off. Cranked later to move machine, raised bucket, put in forward - and nothing. Low rpm, high rpm, neutral to full forward, full reverse - nothing. (very slight whine possibly in full forward position) Trans fluid full, clean, smells ok. All linkages connected (acted like FNR link fell off). Pulling filter this afternoon to check/replace. Ideas? Not very familiar with this machine, Thanks

Try moving it at half throttle and see what happens. If it moves gradually increase throttle and observe. Do in for and rev, then come on back. Later Bob

Tried half throttle, idle, full throttle, forward, reverse, even lowered bucket fast to jerk machine a bit to wiggle tracks but no motion forward or reverse. Shouldn't the center stop/brake pedal pop up when the direction lever is slightly moved out of neutral? The center pedal has no resistance, can lift with my foot and move up and down, but it's like there is nothing attached to the center pedal other than return springs. Moving the FNR lever doesn't seem to have any effect at all. Just picked up new trans filter (only one I could get today was a Napa Gold FIL 1197XE for $60, but figure if it works can replace with CAT), will install this afternoon and see if anything changes. BTW, anyone ever make a home made cab jack? Machine is missing cab jack, and a bit pricey from CAT. Hoping I can find a suitable long ram hydraulic cylinder and adapt to a cab jack (max 24 deg tilt, right?), and make a safety brace link for the other side. Thanks, William

William, something is wrong with the control the center pedal(speed and brake) is connected to. The lever has a hole a 5/16NC bolt will thread into and hold it in the full travel position. Verify the lever position with the bolt in and the pedal up. I think filter is okay since the machine will not travel at low engine speed. The next step is put on gauges. Later Bob

Just finished replacing the cab jack on my 953 20Z as I needed to replace trans filter. My jack was inoperative and unrepairable and new jack was nearly $800.00 from Cat. Ordered a long ram jack from US Jack along with the upper clevis and everything worked nearly perfectly. The new jack had 1" less in ram extension than the old one and required my shortening the safety brace by a like amount. To mount, I drilled and tapped the new jacks baseplate rather than welding to the pivot mount as was the original. Cost was about $300.00 for the jack and clevis shipped and took about 2 hours total to install. Could have machined the base plate off the original and had repaired but opted to spend the money and be done with it. New jack handle even fits in the onboard toolbox, albeit crossways.

Exactly right! The center pedal was corroded/stuck down. I was thinking about the old JD 555 and center pedal coming up, but this Cat is spring loaded up. Should have known after recently replacing bearings in the left foot pedal. Pretty exhausted after 2 days cutting off and welding in new wear plates and strips on the bucket trying to make it flat again, about 40 lbs of rod/filler wire. Found a 3 ton long ram hydraulic jack at harbor freight for $50. May weld a heavy plate with hole in it for the top, and bolt a plate with 1.5" hole in the bottom. Project for the next breakdown. Thanks again...
