Need to add some oil on a new to me Cat 963c, 2ds prefix. Anyone know what kind of oil I need? The front sight glass is empty, will one 5 gallon bucket fill it? Thanks
You need an SAE10W hydraulic oil. No idea as to whether 5 gallons will get the oil level back into the sight glass or not. If you don’t have one yet you should really invest in an Operation & Maintenance Manual. You need Cat Publication reference SEBU7098. New they go for around $50.
Thanks for the reply. Cat HYDO advanced 10 for this?
You don't have to go with Cat-branded oil unless your local dealer is offering super-cheap pricing. Any SAE10W hydraulic oil from a major oil company will do just as well. Remember that Cat don't make oils, an oil company somewhere produces it for them. Don't pay extra for the sticker on the container...... As we always say, don't buy any lubricant that has the words farm, tractor, or universal in either the name of the product or of the store selling it, aka "Joe Blow's Gas & Groceries". EDIT: Good quality lubricants and filters are the cheapest insurance policy you can buy for any machine.
Sometimes your local dealer has competitive pricing on oils so it's worth a phone call to check. Our dealer will run specials from time to time that puts their price in line with other sources. With saying that we buy Cat spec engine and hydro oil from our fuel supplier in bulk 55 gal drums for convenience.
