Cat 980G Hydraulic Pump

Boss ยท 2012-05-29 21:03

On Saturday night our hydraulic pump went, nothing leading up to it didn't put oil to the ground just filled the tranny. Opened it up seal was shot and the front rotor was broke. We ordered all new cartridges and seals so the pump is all new except the housing. Once we had it back together as soon as we started to check it out we could hear a moaning/whining sound, we ran it for a couple hours and while it would dig and hoist it had Nearly not the power it did before and really whines when you are working it. We will change the filters and do a pressure test tomorrow(Does any one know where The port is to check for pressure?) is there anything else we should look At or for?

Not 100% sure but I think you'll find the pressure taps on the main control valve which is under the cover on top of the front axle. Lift up the boom, support it and remove the cover (at least thats were they were on the last 980H I did). Yes, filters must be checked to see what went through the system. It's not a good sign when a pump shaft breaks. How much metal went through the case drain ? Clean break or lots of metal pieces ? How did the old cartridge look ? Also if it was not a clean break you most likely pushed some metal into the tranny through the torn seal and may want to cut/change its filter.

Thanks, I will check for the pressure portals there, we don't have our service manual yet so can't look it up. I wasn't there the night it broke or when the pump was unassembled so not sure if it was a clean break or not, I was told though that the old cartridges were pretty scorched. We already changed the tranny filter as we had to drain all of the hyd fluid out of the tranny and refill with tranny oil, didn't cut the tranny filter though to see if anything was in it.

Here is a short video that I recorded where you can hear the noise, note at the end when I am digging in bank... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKVfiWuSYCo&list=UUtXWCclaPg0tZuazR1ukKvQ&index=1&feature=plcp

Sure it was put together correctly? I'm not sure if it is possible in this pump but on other pumps it is pssoible to position the cartridge the wrong way so it sucks instead of pumps, perhaps the middle one is the wrong way around? Is it both slow and weak or just weak? I'm surprised the newer type gear pump wasn't fitted, these vanepumps are crappy, fails all the time and is extremely sensisitve for air in the oil for example at oil changes or startup after replacement.

It was both slow and weak. When we first put the cartridges in we had put one backwards but changed That immediately as it wouldn't raise bucket so we knew something was wrong, but after putting them the right way we ran into this problem. But we found the solution we put the old rear pig in with the new front and it Works great so the new back cartridge was put together wrong so we are sending it back And should have the new one tomorrow and hopefully it will run out stronger then ever. Such a simple solution is usually how it ends up.

agree with per. thought there was an up date to replace vane pumps with gear pump on 980g s,much better service life etc. regards greg

sounds like the vanes are the wrong way around in one of the cartridges

Do any of you have a picture comparing the vane vs geared pump

  9. #9Per Eriksson2012-05-31 14:52

No pic , but the vanepump is replaced with a gear pump along with 3 tubes and 3 hoses and other small bits and bobs.

There are various different setups of implement and fan pump listed for 980G so in order to give good advice would need your exact S/N. PM me with it if you like.

Thanks for the offer, but problem has been fixed.

So "Boss" are you going to share the "fix" with us? Your failure sounds just like the one we had back in 2004 with our 980G 2KR03066. I think I have some pictures if anyone is interested.

Reread some of the earlier posts, so the problem was an incorrectly assembled cartridge? Like some have said the vane pumps are sensitive to air in oil. Now on the old IH and Hough loaders we had good luck with them. The difference is on those the hydraulic tank is above the pumps so no problem of being starved for oil on start-up. Even the older Cats like the original 988's 966's and 980's all had vane pumps and I don't ever recall one that failed like the 980G's do. They would wear out the cam ring and whine like crazy, but that was more likely from dirt in the oil.

Yes the cartridge was bad, got the right one and ran like a top, until it developed a miss and was pouring white smoke . 6 new injectors and a new head on the way hoping the problem will be fixed!
