CAT Backhoe with no power

CCGC ยท 2009-01-04 00:04

I have a 2001 CAT 416 Backhoe that loses all power as soon as you push on the 'gas'. The problem started 6 months ago with just some loss of power while pushing dirt uphill. Now it will only idle; if you give it any gas [uphill, downhill, side to side] it dies no matter what. I have drained the fuel and replaced the filters and it has not fixed the problem. Any suggestions for this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Check the fuel transfer pump. Take it off and clean it. Work it by hand and see if it sucks and blows. (Is it possible for something to both suck and blow at the same time? Maybe if it's made in China?? )

Not familiar with Cat rubber tyre diggers but on a case 1455 had the filter on the tank suction pipe block, and again on a ford 550 and a 50hxs there is a filter on the input pipe at the back of the injector pump ,so I fit an inline filter to prevent any further instances on my remaining vintage equipment. Ps anyone got info on a petters single cyl diesel barford dumper

Hey stock. Do you mean Barford or Benford? What do you need to know? It's probably 20-odd years since I touched a small dumper, but I remember probably a PAZ1 or a PH1 engine, standard 3+R Newage 'box, clutch with a pre-war carbon block release bearing, flexi-coupling (metalistic?) in the prop shaft and gravity-tip skip. Make sure you've got the right starting-handle. The small Lister and Petter diesels could be set up to run either way and if your starting handle is the wrong hand, you'll get nothing but smoke from the air filter and a pair of lungs on the floor. Thinking back now, if it's a PH, the cylinder head nuts can be a bugger to get off. Good quality 5/16WW ring-spanner-with-the-outside-ground-down needed. Injector pump needs to be timed by the "spill timing" method. Good compression needed for successful hand starting. Lap the valves by hand to the old school "grey band" standard. Never, ever, ever, ever, ever stop the engine with the decompressor or you'll undo all your hard valve-lapping work. Thanks for the memories mate....

He was responding to Stocks question. If you haven't seen it yet, pop back to the C@t 420 thread that you were posting in as a couple more recent posts might help you.

And it's my guess...the loader arms are down and right smack in your way. I'm not sure about your model, but most 416's I've worked on have the Perkins engine that uses a lift pump that have a strainer screen inside of it. You should be able remove a cover on the lift pump and see if there's trash in there. You could also have an obstruction in you tank line. Remove your fuel fill cap, take your fuel supply line loose from the lift pump (or from fuel filter if it feeds there first), and give it a shot of compressed air with a rubber tipped air nozzle. You should hear a good burst of bubbles inside your tank. Re-connect fuel line to lift pump, remove fuel line "out" from lift pump, and hand pump it until you get a good feed of fuel. If you don't develop feed, lift pump's probably crapped out.

Great result, :thumbsup thanks for the update, its always good to know if a suggestion works and cures the problem.

CCGC, you've learned one more little thing in taking care of your machine. Consider this, though, if your lift pump was full of crap, I think I would drain the fuel tank and maybe wash it out. Chances are, it's got crap in the bottom. It donated some of it to your lift pump.

Very good point and advise, I remember now doing the same to my first duck as it started to get fuel problems after I ran it low a couple of times. Quite a fright as to just how much crud builds up in the bottom of a tank.

  16. #16willie592009-01-17 19:47

Yeah, it must be one of those quirky facts of nature that diesel fuel, unlike gasoline, seems to have a propensity to develop crud in the bottom of your tank. I've had to wash out a number of tanks, and on a few I've asked myself "how the heck was this thing running?"

Cat 420D New member looking up something for my Pops. As my name states I'm "DaPlumber" and can help with plumbing questions. I hope. Anyway, my Pop has a 2004-Cat 420D with a problem. It runs fine under load. Example: With the engine at proper backhoe operating RPM's and the backhoe moving-seems to run fine but.... If you take your hands off the hydraulics & it's running then you get blue smoke from the stack and what sounds like a "skip" in the engine. No apparrent loss of power. It has around 400 hours. He's babied it and kept the old Ford 675 doing the brunt of the work. Ideas? Fuel filters? Thanks for all replies. I would have started a new thread but am too new to do so.

  18. #18willie592009-01-18 20:52

You said the engine runs fine under load when using the backhoe, doesn't sound like filters are the problem. Not enough info for me to venture a guess on this one yet.

  19. #19DaPlumber2009-01-18 23:10

Thank you for the reply. He says he's going to change the filters anyway. Any tips? Is there a fuel shutoff to look for? Cat dealer is an hour away but there opening one near soon. Thanks again. DaPlumber.

  20. #20AtlasRob2009-01-22 12:51

Do you get the same effect if using the front bucket. Example, driven into heap fill bucket and relax ? You would need to do it with the engine revs set at a similar revs to when using backhoe, using the foot throttle would not be a fair chance of repeating the possible problem. I am wondering if there is a load sensor playing up when the pump comes off load. Assuming of course that there is such a sensor. :beatsme

Rags floating around in the fuel tank, are not good, either.:Banghead:Banghead:Banghead

  22. #22mailtrain2009-01-30 20:05

This is for Daplumber: How do you fuel the machine is it with a 5 gallon can, barrel or a regular fuel tank? Almost sounds like an injector isn't quite right or there is some water in the system. Blue smoke could be the by-product of diesel fuel. A little more info would help. mailtrain

To the OP: so the problem was with the lift pump? What does it do?

  24. #24diesal2019-01-17 15:45

I have a jcb 3cx backhoe it works fine idlying and power but lost some speed traveling any suggestions.maybe filter. dirt in the line; pump weakening?
