Cat D5 LGP speed control issues

kentuckynet · 2024-10-14 17:03

hello, i have a 2006 model d5G LGP that the speed control only works when you first start up before you put it in gear. It works fine at this point, but after you put it in forward or reverse it wont change. Turn the machine off and restart it works fine again until you put it in forward or reverse. Any thoughts?

Post a Serial Number please. Do you know how to access Diagnostic Codes.? Because pulling the Codes is probably the first thing you will need to do.

thanks for the super fast reply! No i do not know how to get the codes? serial number MHK18469

1 check for proper battery/alternator voltage 2 check for codes If not active recalibrate powertran. If you have active codes (id nearly bet my lunch money there will be speed sensor codes)

As Tyler mentioned the correct system voltage is the first thing you should check. The electronics on these tractors seem very finicky if it isn’t up to spec. Check fan belt condition and tension while you are at it. At idle I reckon you should be looking for somewhere around 13.5v and a bit higher than that at full engine RPM. Info on accessing Codes to follow, but you need to do the above checks first to eliminate low voltage as a possible cause of your problem before moving forward.

That's actually the engine Serial Number but no worries, the tractor S/N is RKG03245

can i assume this is where i am suppose to get codes? i searched this site for instructions and somethings not the same?

voltage fan belt, batteries replaced last week etc, alternator all good.

Sorry I meant to circle back on this one and forgot. The circular grey connector is where the factory tech hooks up his computer to read Codes. You have to do it slightly different. Unplug the two halves of the black rectangular 8-pin connector in the top left of your photo., turn the key to the ON position, and watch the red Indicator Light on the right side above the fuses. It will flash a 3-digit Code, e.g. 168. it will continue to repeatedly flash that Code until you tell it to scroll to the next one. At the end of the list the Indicator Light will flash the first Codes again. Use the attachment for instructions how you scroll to the next Code. It also has a list to help you decipher the Flash Codes. Post back if you have any questions.

thank you so much for these replies, this is a wonderful site!!! It had lots and lots of codes, i wrote them all down and erased each one and drove the machine to find only one came back, 246 speed sensor right track, any idea on what i do now? Not sure where its located and do i just replace it?

Nige is the MAN with much knowledge, I can only try to help. The right speed sensor is located at the rear in front of the lower plate you have to remove below the fuel fill. It is not easily seen because it is on the front side. You can easily see the left rear speed sensor and figure out where the right one is. Before replacing, check the electrical wiring on the right speed sensor. If if has to be replaced, it must be calibrated. These are generalities and some one will chime in with much better instructions.

can i get the older part number and it be plug and play?

does anyone have a part number? are both left and right the same part?

Well thanks to @reganj who had exactly the same problem a while back who has filled in some of the blanks. You remove the tin covers at the back of the machine below the fuel tank and you are looking right at them - #16 & 16A in the illustration. #16A on the left will be in plain sight, #16 on the right side will be hidden on the back side of the drive motor from the side you are looking from. The illustration below shows the new style of speed sensor with the modified electrical connector on the machine side if the harness pictured above it. Your machine probably has the former 183-4584 sensors installed. First what you should do is test the wiring just to confirm that the sensor is actually defective. The sensors are not cheap and you don't need to go lashing out money if you don't need to..... Actually there is a quick and dirty test you can do first. Find the electrical connector between the machine harness and the RH sensor then unplug it. As already mentioned the RH sensor is not in the most accessbile of places. You may need a mirror to see it but check if the connector on the sensor is full of oil.? If it is then it's guaranteed the sensor has failed. If you find the sensor connector dry then you should go on to test the wiring before purchasing a replacement. The procedure is attached below. I'll send you a complete electrical schematic. Keep an eye on your message inbox. No, it's updated to the new Part Number. There are no other options. Also attached SEPD1270 containing the details of the additional parts (a connector and 4 pins) that are required to install the latest Part Number of sensor. It is not a difficult update to perform. The latest Part Number is 360-0453. Both sides are the same P/N. Be prepared for a small quantity of oil to come out of the drive motr when you remove the old sensor. Any questions please ask.

thank you, i will post b ack what i find, i will need to find time first! seems like time is always a problem again, thank you so much for what you do helping people here. mack

Should he replace both sensors since they probably have the same hours and will not have to do the other at a later date??

Personally i would the ones ive done i did. Also shoukd recalibrate the powertrain also

I never thought of this until now. To the OP - you really should get some covers for those fuse boxes before the green crusties start to take over.
