Cat D6K2 Speed Sensor Code

Catchad81 · 2020-03-11 20:36

Need some help from the folks with the knowledge, especially Nige. Got a new to me 2015 D6K2 LGP, RST00704, with 3100 hours on it. Engine was rebuilt around 3000 per me. Knew it had two active codes when purchased but cat dealer was familiar with the owners, had sold the machine originally and known the machines history so didn’t think much of it. Machine takes a few turn overs to crank, idles and revs fine. Still pushes but feels somewhat underpowered. Active code is 190-08. Computer shows problem is primary speed sensor in left side of engine block. Replaced with new and no change. Wiring checks out good and tried a test ecm with no success. Computer shows machine is derailed but doesn’t say how much. Microscoped thru the speed sensor hole and gear looks to be fine with three bolts holding it in I’m told. Can’t tell about a key. So question is could the gear have been misaligned when the engine was rebuilt causing this code and the derating? Is there something else we should be looking for?

remove the speed /timing sensor and with a small screwdriver see if the steel timing ring is loose also carefully rotate the engine and check for damaged or bent areas on the sensor ring this has been a common problem on earlier engine I have also attached the sensor test procedure as well mark

    Thanks. Will check this out.

Based on what Mark has indicated I'd suggest to have a look at the sensor ring first, then if that shows nothing out of the ordinary perform the Troubleshooting Procedure for the 190-08 code.

Cat mechanic says he put a screwdriver on it yesterday and all seemed tight. Could not see anything wrong with scope but was solo and couldn’t spin it while looking. We will do that tomorrow. looking at the parts, appears this gear presses on the crank. Is that accurate? If so is it slipping be the previous troubles in these motors?

Meant to add that mechanic checked pins on wiring as well.

its riveted on, they wear and the holes elongate mark

this shows the earlier ring set up it is pretty much the same now

Timing was was damaged during original rebuild we found out. Got it replaced and ran fine. Now gets code 1319-2 when it gets warm. Any direction on what that code is?

Generically a 1319 Event is related to the "EGR Mass Flow Rate Not Responding". I sent you something.

Thanks for this. Is there a usual culprit?

No idea, never had to troubleshoot oine. Go through the procedure step by step is all I can suggest. The fact that it only appears when the engine gets hot could indicate something electronic could be breaking down once it gets a bit of heat in it.

Run the procedure thru to the last step of testing the back pressure regulator. Found carbon buildup in the smaller hoses and pulled off what we could to clean. Is this typical? Found air leaking at one gasket and replaced. Still throws code after machine runs for a few, sometimes 30 minutes sometimes right away. I’ll have to get cat to check the regulator...apparently there is some calibration required.

Nige, run all procedures and replaced the NRS mixer and the EGR valve. Machine will run for roughly eight minutes before throwing code. Never has started up with the code active. Maybe next I go ahead and change out the three sensors but a couple of other information. 1) Will not pass non service (forget name) regen test. Will not run service regen because of no buildup in system. 2) Boost pressure holds at 12-14 psi at wide open throttle and no load on machine. is the boost pressure a sign of anything? Would a stopped up egr cooler cause any other this? The code testing procedure does not mention the egr cooler but the eight minutes we are down to in run time makes me think it can’t get hot enough to cause a problem anyway.

I'm sorry I can be of no help to you. I've never had hands on a machine equipped with exhaust aftertreatment, a result of always working in non-emissions-regulated countries. Maybe some of the US-based members can chime in.? One comment I will make. Boost pressure is only a realistic number when measured with the transmission stalled in 3rd speed. Try measuring it that way and see what you come up with.

So what’s this something you sent? I’m having same issue

Start from the beginning please. Serial Number for a start, background (if any) leading up to what you have now, and what you have now which assume is a 1319 Event.
