Greetings, My 1969 Cat D7E 47A is missing the fuel priming pump group (the small manual pump on the right side of the motor), including fuel lines. Someone removed it and capped off the holes where the fuel lines went. It looks like maybe one of the mounting studs broke off. I have had no luck locating these parts anywhere. By chance, does anyone have or know of these parts for sale anywhere? Also, if anyone has this setup on their dozer, could you please post some pictures? I would like to see what it actually looks like mounted. I have only seen the illustration in the parts manual. Attached is a picture of where mine was mounted. Thanks in advance!
Update: I have seen two nearly identical tractors that have a factory-looking cover plate over where the priming pump would be. Does anyone know if the priming pump was an option that wasn't on every tractor? Any opinion about whether or not I should even go through the effort of locating a priming pump for my tractor? My initial thought was that it would be good to have if I ever lost fuel prime. However, with an electric starter turning over the motor, it might not be as important as I originally thought. Please let me know your thoughts..
It looks like the bottom of your mounting face there is broken off. No point in reparing that unless you enjoy spending money and have nothing better to do.
Thanks, can you please educate me on what kind of circumstance I would need the priming pump? There is a parts dozer near me where I could get this whole housing. Just trying to gauge whether or not it’s worthwhile.
The fuel priming pump is needed to get air out of the filter and fuel system, especially after a fuel filter change. This is because the filter is mounted high, and the injection pump is mounted low in comparison, and the fuel system is difficult to clear air from, thanks to its design. The fuel transfer pump has inadequate flow at cranking speed to clear the air from the fuel system. There are two styles of Cat priming pump, the early style that your tractor was fitted with, is a small diameter brass version that is a very slow pumper. In most cases you're better advised to pressurise the fuel tank a little, using a rag and a shop air line in the fuel tank filler neck, to get fuel moving through the fuel system, to get air out. Later Cats have a much large diameter priming pump that provides a better fuel pumping ability. I was under the impression all the Cats of the 1960's were fitted with the brass priming pump - but a close look at the D7E 48A parts book shows no priming pump fitted - so it must have been an extra-cost option, early on. Here is the fuel priming pump that was fitted to the Cats of the 1960's and early 1970's. New Fuel Priming Pump Kit 9H2256 Replacement Fit For CAT 3304 D5B 98 | eBay Part Number: 9H2256. Type: Fuel Pump. Fits several Fits Caterpillar Engine models such as the following: 3116, 3126, 3126B, 3126E. www.ebay.com.au The choice whether you fit the brass priming pump is entirely yours. They're a PIA when it comes to moving fuel (especially fuel with air entrained), you spend a lot of time pumping, to move very little fuel. The pressurised fuel tank is the simplest way to get air out of the fuel system, but it's more difficult to do that when you're on your own, so that's where the fuel priming pump is an advantage.
