Alright..this thing is about to get set on fire. 8CR00481 ESN: 98Z22866 1997 3116 mechanical 4200 hours Ok..So. This poor thing has been abused by so called "mechanics" Initially this thing was runnin ROUGH. Awful bad. I was told that it had recently had injectors installed. I couldnt find much info in the work orders so i decided that the issues began after the injectors were installed so maybe they didnt ream the cups. So i pulled the injectors, resealed them. Bottom seal included since that is what it showed on SIS. Synced them...good thing cause the dude had the adjusting screw all the way out on #3. Timed. checked overhead. All good. Runs good. Adjusted the ratio a bit. Sounds like a happy kitty. Buuuut...It dont wanna cold start for nothin. Coughin white smoke everywhere and continues to smoke at idle. Replaced fuel filters Checked my fuel return for restrictions and air bubbles, nothing. Went to check pressure post filter but i dont have a flippin adapter to work. After it has been started. Starts right back up. It seems to be only cold starts. This is gonna be a snow plow unit here any day and i need to figure this stupid thing out ASAP. Any help would be tremendous.
Does it have an intake grid heater, and is it working? Otherwise, plug it in, and when you use it, run it like a rental.
Have you looked for a parasitic load? Bucket lever held in rackback for example. Also, does this one have an air-to-water aftercooler? They can get blocked with oil from a leaky turbo.
Does not have any kind of supplemental heater. No intake, no block.
No, no engine load or strain or anything like that. I dont believe so. looks like standard CAC and radiator. No evidence of any leaks around the turbo. Seems to spool and build boost fine.
you have more experience than I do, but I'd say it needs a grid heater and a block heater to be a plow machine. The only 3116 I've ever gotten to know that well would smoke out a parking lot at first, cleared up in five minutes and would be less and less smoke at start up the more it was used until it would smoke less than any other at the same temp, then let it sit a couple years and it would blow some white smoke again at first start up, but not nearly as bad and cleared much faster than originally. It sounds like you did a great job, run it and see what it does.
You're correct in stating that IT28G S/N 8CR00481 does not have an intake heater. However the 128-0209 Starting Aid Group is an attachment (optional extra in other words) that was not installed on your machine when it was built. It is the grid heater and the cab switch, timer, & wiring to operate it. I suggest that you get hold of one and install it. See attached. The wiring is all part of the main harness and connectors should be there to plug it straight into, The dashed lines on the snip of the schematic below are the "attachment" parts.
Whatever criticism the one-point-one MUI engines attract, hard starting isn't usually one of them. Maybe you're low on compression. How's the blowby? Any sounds of valve leakage into the intake/exhaust manifold when cranking?
The OP is somewhere a bit (make that a lot) cooler than the Gold Coast though.......
I seen where that was an option to add and i really didnt want to try to add that under the simple fact that im being told that before this thing was molested it would start in any weather condition, no problem. So i cant figure out why, even after making sure everything is set correctly, that it does not want to start. Maybe it is a compression issue given that it was possibly not even firing on #3 before i fixed it...washed out that hole maybe? blow-by isnt excessive. No signs of valve leakage, like i said it sounds great. You may be on to something with the compression...give it a taste of ether and it fires right up...or maybe theres a bit of damage to one or two of the injectors from running bad for so long...i dont want to but maybe ill pull the injectors to get tested and check compression while im at it. I dont know what else it could be at this point and i dont want to tell the operators to give er a shot of ether to get it goin...last time that happened i had a man lift come in with a broken piston...
Did you set the timing to spec or advance it a little. Cat had us advancing the timing spec on the early 3116. It helped clear up the smoke on startup in cold weather. We advanced them .25 mm from spec.
Hmm..No i didnt. Timing on the injectors?
Yes. Subtract .25 mm from the spec on the valve cover. So if spec is 65.05 set to 64.80 Works well for cold starts. I do it to every one. Intake heater would be nice too.
Double post
Awesome, Ill give it a try. Intake heater would be very nice...
Before going to all the trouble of wiring an intake heater, you could give it the old propane torch test. Shoot a burning torch in the intake for a short time and then crank with the torch still in there and see if it starts any cleaner. If it does, you know added heat may solve your problem, if it does not, then you look elsewhere.
Ive added inline coolant heaters to 3 of my machines with exceptional results.
Sorry, all the Christmas craziness. I advanced the timing on the injectors and that seems to have done the trick! Thank you!
I Have installed a Inline Heater on a 966C. Had to take a side of the engine block coolant cover off. welded a 3/4 inch pipe coupling onto the plate and ran the coolant through it from the bottom radiator hose to make a complete loop. The motor started as never before in northern British Columbia Canada at minus 35 Celcius. That system is exceptional for starting in cold weather. Simon
