CAT turbocharger broke, looking for a source of a lower price then CAT dealer

lake side bob · 2014-03-03 11:10

On the air compressor which is not used much, we noticed the turbo for the CAT 3306 engine where it mounts to the engine block is broken into two pieces. Need to replace the turbo charger. There is no core charge, CAT wants $2500.00 plus freight for new, same as a re-manufactured because no core charge credit. What suppliers do you use for replacement turbochargers? Any suggestions on removing the mounting bolts that connect the turbo base to the engine block? They have only been in the machine for couple decades! Any one try welding the metal on a turbo before ( the mounting bracket) and what was the result?

I had to replace a turbo on my 320CL and found a place down in Tennessee that deals in OEM new cat parts. The name is Off Road Equipment Parts 888-379-7895, They saved me 50% over my local Cat dealer for genuine Cat parts. I would suggest giving them a call they have saved me a bundle and in these times we need to save all we can.

Costex Tractor Parts (CTP). Miami. Lots of buisness with them, no problems. Great prices.

Wouldn't hurt to start with penetrating oil, and if one breaks free keep working it a little bit back and forth till is sucks in the oil and loosens enough that it won't seize on the way out. If the bolts break off, weld a nut over the top, can't hurt to give it a good tap when it's at it's hottest. Work on something else until it's dead cool and if they snap off again, repeat. Welding the turbo housing can't be too different than an exhaust manifold, can it? Can't be any worse anyway. TIG with stainless filler works nice to butter up and scrub the carbon out of the surface, or stick weld with stainless or NI maybe?

As long as the bearings are good and its not squealing or blowing oil.. weld her up.. That metal is pretty thick.. You "are talking about" the exhaust housing?? with the 4 bolts mounting it to the block?? IF SO.. weld away..

A photo would answer all the questions .............

  6. #6lake side bob2014-03-04 12:45

I agree with the photo. When out to the machine looked at it an what do you know, the mounting bracket is not cracked its the exhaust bracket out of the turbo thats cracked. Now the questin is can you all communicate some suggestions on how to repair it at a low cost vs $2500 for new turbo.

  7. #7lake side bob2014-03-04 12:49

Correction. The mounting bracket is not cracked, its the turbo exhaust pipe that's cracked. See photo. Any suggestions on how to repair it with out spending $2500.00 on a new turbo from CAT.

it looks like you need a exhaust elbow not a turbo

  9. #9d9gdon2014-03-04 13:13

Cut the bolt heads off and replace the elbow. They're available aftermarket. It comes apart from the turbo. That little short section of pipe in between the turbo and the elbow has a metal o-ring on each end to seal the exhaust gases. The old ones are fun to get out. ...or just weld your old one. Thousands of them have been broken from driving under trees or other overhanging stuff.

P.S. replace the missing clamps on the fuel injection lines, # 1 cause of cracked/leaking lines.

  11. #11Nige2014-03-04 15:32

Nail, head, hit .................. that elbow looks as though it's been broken a long time judging by the amount of black crud directly under the crack. If you want a Part Number give us the Serial Number of the engine. A quick look through a few 3306 Industrial engines and I found this illustration. It may not be the one you have but it looks very adjacent.

  12. #12lake side bob2014-03-04 17:21

The engine serial number is 66D14810 Model 3306 s/b 250 HP

  13. #13lake side bob2014-03-04 17:26

Would you communicate what clamps are missing, I am not aware of any missing. They appear to be all there and fuel lines attached, what am I missing? Clamp for three furl lines are at the far right of exhuest manifold and other three lines clamped just under turbo charger. Were are the missing ones?

  14. #14Nige2014-03-04 17:58

Drawn a blank on the Serial Number. Nothing like that elbow is listed. That means that the elbow could have been added by the compressor manufacturer after buying the engine from Cat, although TBH it looks like a Cat one to me. Does the engine data plate have an Arrangement Number on it by any chance..? I may be seeing things but is there a Part Number cast into the exhaust elbow in the photo..? if so it doesn't happen to be 2Y5345 does it..?

the engine arraggement is 6N1309 the part may be 369-9498 or 3s6263 from what I am looking into.

  16. #16Mobiltech2014-03-04 19:41

The elbow is a 369-9498 which is a classic part for a 3S5017 elbow. A 3S6263 is a coupling , which you probably don't need.

Looks like what we used to see on 966C Loaders 76J02856 vintage. I'm having a problem getting a picture to save but this one is a little different from the one Nige showed. I come up with a part number 3S5017 for the elbow which goes for $409.96, but has a "Classic Version" for $144.00 it is part number 369-9498. Maybe Nige can post the picture of this one. Any chance the 3S5017 is the number cast on the broken one?

  18. #18Nige2014-03-05 06:16

KSH was spot on. The exact same elbow is used on 966C. Here's the illustration. I would also recommend replacing the 2 spring steel rings (1 x 5L-8855 and 1 x 2S-5301) in the connector between the turbo and the lbow because they usually break when you pull the whole thing apart anyway. Here's a thought, the elbow currently installed is a Classic aka cheap Cat part, and it's broken. That would seem to indicate that at some time in the past the original 3S-8015 Elbow (because surely the engine was not supplied with a Classic Part to begin with) also broke and was replaced. If it was mine I'd be looking carefully at the exhaust installation and asking myself why it keeps breaking..? Is something out of line, too tight, too loose, because surely there is something wrong somewhere, at least IMHO.

Like someone else mentioned in this thread, try Costex in Miami. I just saved a ton of money on my D-6H parts through them. Our CAT dealer actually hooked me up with the source and found the parts for me. Good luck Ron

Hi I recently had the same problem and I bought the turbocharger from a supplier in Polish for 800 euros, a new and original. I would recommend. e-mail to the seller, this office [at] hmp.olsztyn.pl

The elbow will be cheap to replace.replace the coupling and rings aswell as they will be cheap. It's not worth the fiddling on with the rings in trying to replace them.Just buy new. As yer man says though, why does it keep cracking?.It's worth looking if something isn't quiet lined up right. As for a new turbo,I think you know now that you don't need one but if you accidently damage something......... I bought a D8K turbo cartridge and hot side from Canadian company ROTOMAX at about £700.00 sterling.Cat was about £2000.00 sterling but I could of used a Mexican brand at £350.00 sterling and decided against it.

Go to General Tractor in Shakopee, they will have it used, or call Ray at polar parts in Savage Lee
