Hi im trying to read the fault codes on a Cat C4.4 electronic control engine. What scan tool will do the job or is there any way a cheap engine display would do appreciate if anybody has a way to read them. thanks Parkside
You need someone with Caterpillar ET software on their laptop plus a Cat Comms Adapter. AFAIK nothing else out there will read codes on a Cat electronic engine.
Thanks for that, I was told that it could be done ????? using something like a Engine Display Module such as the Powerview Murphy PV-101c or something similar. Did anyone ever hear of or try anything like that
By someone that works in a Cat dealership...?
I looked at that user manual online of that Murphy display. It said it could display engine operating parameters on the j1939 including active and stored faults Thats something i wonder if anyone Knows or even tried ???
Maybe you could connect it to the cat 9 pin Diag Socket and thats it ?????
J1939 is the communication protocol used by Cat (and other) on-highway engines which can be read by aftermarket tools. Cat industrial engines and earthmoving machinery however use the proprietary CDL (Cat Data Link) which can only be read by ET.
Good point CM. I took a look at the code reader mentioned by the OP and it seems as though the complete range of readers is designed around J1939 and CANbus. Unfortunately that won't work on anything other than a Cat on-highway truck engine, and TBH I think that it's only the older models of Cat on-highway engine that can be accessed via the J1939 datalink.
If it's a Perkins branded rather than a Cat branded engine, Cat ET won't work, you need the Perkins EST software as ET will not read Perkins software. Perkins/Cat have thought of that and aren't going to sell one tool when they can sell two. The Cat service tool will work, but you need the EST software on your laptop.
