Why no younger than 25? We have a mechanic on permanent hire from the local Komatsu dealer who's been working for them since he was 13 (sweeping floors etc). He was fully licensed the same day he graduated high school and knows more about scrapers than the Finning boys (biggest Cat dealer network in the world). Oh and he's 23.

OK the 25 yo requirement was based on normal education programs, so if he is older than 23 and has all certifications then I see no problem

  3. #3Lee-online2011-05-25 22:17

What kind of work needs done and what kind of equipment?

  4. #4willie592011-05-25 22:38

3 to 10 weeks, doubt you would get a Cat tech to pack his bags for such a short period.

  5. #5Lee-online2011-05-25 22:50

I'm thinking it would be an all expenses paid vacation. I need one.

  6. #6willie592011-05-25 22:53

well, there is that Lee. great idea. :drinkup

  7. #7ESTRONCIUM2011-05-26 08:27

well, 3 month is a basic testing periods, if the person likes it (the work and the area) then we will provide for a one year contract so at the end he will have a solid job for a minimum of 15 months ....regarding the vacation, well, it can be a partial time vacation, we normally work from 7:15 am to 4:00 pm M to Sat and some times we don't work Saturdays. We work on : Dozer , Compactors, Generators, and excavators, we are a small shop that services government agencies and companies on hi tech power , transportation and heavy equipment.

90% of the work is miner; calibrations , gasket and seals replacements, hoses, some general diag. and repairs, and also general services, we eventually have engines overhauls and other more challenging operations,

Working more hours in a week and then next week off type setup is nothing you do? What kind of pay can one expect?

  12. #12Lee-online2011-06-03 17:51

We have done this type of thing before. When we were slow we sent some mechanics to Alaska for a few months to a year. This helped us because we were slow and them because they needed the help. We are way too busy now and i could never get approved to leave.

  13. #13ESTRONCIUM2011-06-06 10:03

yes we do that one on and X off, but it becomes a bit expensive if you are planning to go back to the USA every week , regarding salaries.....well, it all depends on your skill level and the amount of hours you actually work, now the average of this salaries are 2500-3000 (44 hours/week) usd for a full mechanic keep in mind that here minimum salary is 241 usd/month (44.h/week) the good side is that with 1000 usd a month you cover all expences (including happy hours!!!)

Age Over 25 and Under 60 ??????????? So age tells you how good they may or may not be does it In most parts of Asia Pacific (Australia, New Zealand & Pacific Rim) you would Face court with an advert such as that. It would be seen as discrimination. From person experience I know many brilliant Mechanics outside of that age group. I also know many so called Mechanics with enough certificates and papers to cover a wall who are in within the age groups that you specify that I would not even trust with a spanner on a machine. Whats best, Someone with a piece of paper that says they can do the job or someone with No Papers But can do the Job? I know which one I would choose anyday. It should be on ability to do the job. In my operation here in Laos I have many under 25s (Both Male & Female) many 60+ and even a 74yo. All great Technicians. I totally agree with a previous response. That a Good CAT tech would not even entertain the idea of moving for such a short term. As it is some time since the origional thread was posted It would be interesting to see what transpired.

So how is he supposed to advertise the position? "this is a free-for-all if you show up and you can 'talk a good fight' and your mate says your good on spanners you got the job?" As he said its short-term leading to a longer term position to see how it works out - for both parties, that would seem completely normal to me. The world is getting smaller all the time.
