Cracked Welds – Your advise to repair?

Jeepwalker ยท 2012-09-20 21:24

Guys, Got an 1845C that is used for light use around the place. Bought it used a couple yrs ago, I never noticed that the welds at the main pivot point on both sides are cracked (see picture). What kind of steel did they use on these, for purposes of welding up? Not that it really matters, but is this a common problem? Thanks, Jeepwalker

Hammers really make this happen. Every one of the 6 at work have been broken many times. Vee out as best you can and weld with 7018. They are a tough machine!

Air arc crack out and get to the base of the crack and do passes to fill air arc gap out with 3/32 7018 avg 120-140 amp 1st pass then 85-95 amps for rest of the pass

if you drill a hole like a 1/4 inch drill bit size a half inch past the crack on either end then grind out and weld with 7018 or whatever rod your comfortable with or a decent size mig gun. if you try to weld with something your not comfortable with you wont be helping yourself any.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I can V out the crack and weld with either arc or wire-feed. But let me ask you this: this unit has about 5000 hrs on it. It seems pretty tight still, but I'm wondering if this is the time to pull the pins and check for wear ....and possibly replace the bushings?

Does the loader or bucket wobble or shakes as you operate it? If not leave it alone. Unless you feel Like pulling whole loader off machine and check em how ever if need to be worked on you should check out bore welders and they do great job. I'm bout ready to purchase one in a yr or two. Most bushing I've seen is welded on
