Just was lifting up a parts truck today with my 413xt, nice strong bucket arm on the beast. Went to restart and she'll crank but no start. Surfed around a little and see that Cummins fuel shutoff issues are common. Going out to tackle it now, will report back.
On the right side of the motor, back side of the injection pump, is a lever that's supposed to be pulled by a solenoid. I guess that solenoid is weak. We checked that its connections are clean. If I turn on the ignition, then pull that lever all the way left, to the rear of the vehicle, then it clicks into place and stays there, opening the fuel shutoff. So at least now I have a workaround to start my grader. I should probably also make sure that the solenoid is getting a healthy 12v. Anybody know the best place to buy Cummins part online?
There is a possibility that your solenoid may be ok. The start coil isn't pulling the rod but your hold coil is working. You can use a test light on the start wire to check for current. While the starter is turning the engine you should have power at that wire, it will lose power when the starter motor is disengaged. Check this before you buy a new solenoid assembly. The start circuit is usually run through a neutral start switch and sometimes a seat switch. You can also hot wire the start wire to see if it pulls (the cheat way) lol
The white (pull-in) wire should never be energized continuously. 20 seconds at a time, maximum, or you risk burning out the the pull-in coil. Red wire should be key hot, and crank hot. White, only crank hot.
If you need a solenoid try LARRYBS in Vaughn Washington they sell the Cummins one for about 90 bucks. They also sell a bunch of other other ones for all kinds of engines. Bob
Thanks guys. Got a big job coming up, just bid on it. Appreciate that useful advice.
Our Alitec is like that. I have moved it manually many times, and it will work a hundred times, and then do it again. Had a 730 champion that would do the same thing, especially on really hot days.
Got good batteries? I've had plenty calls for similar issues, check the voltage on the pull in while cranking and its in the toilet and the starter sounds like it's having a bit of a time.
