Hello, Thanks in advance WE have a Cummins 855 series that yesterday started leaking oil from a crack in the pan. We fished part number 3019218 out of the drain plug. Looks to me from what parts descriptions I have found that it is a thrust washer. One of 4. We do not yet have the truck back to the shop to tear into it further. Does anyone have any info about what we might be facing? Engine was still apparently running normally. Part does show some wear did not show marks of hitting or jamming against anything on its way out. There could be other parts in the pan we did not find. It was getting dark. Randy
Hi Randy. When you get the truck back to the shop pull the oil pan & roll in new rod & main bearings. The 855 uses a four piece thrust washer system and its not uncommon to find one half of the thrust bearing cracked when doing an engine overhaul.
Sorry this is so late. We solved the mystery. About 15,000 miles back had a local shop roll in new rod and main bearings. When we tore it down we found that the dunder heads had put the wider rear main bearings in the FRONT position so there was room for the thrust washers at the rear to work one of them out. Also as two main bearings was not in the wrong place the oil holes did not line up properly and now the rear and front bearings showed copper. As was the rods next to them. The crank looked good but we was very close to a spun bearing. This time we was not in as big a hurry so we put them in correctly. Now I can understand some idiots working in a local shop doing stupid things like that but why did Cummings build the front main saddle wide enough to take the wrong bearing? I guess they do not work with the same idiots we do. Of course that shop has lost a customer. Randy
Oops, corrected sentance Also as two main bearings was in the wrong place the oil holes did not line up properly and now the rear and front bearings showed copper. As was the rods next to them.
