It should have a seal between the starter drive and armature

Did you replace the gasket on the starter mounting

Use a new mount flange gasket. I usually throw the gasket away and use a silicone sealer. The gaskets always swell and shrink with heat/cool cycles and the starter bolts end up loose.

Not familiar with the 155 does it have a scavenge pump in the convertor housing or does it gravity drain back to trans check to see if there is a strainer in the drain or suction side of pump. I'm thinking that there is to much oil in housing

Use a silicon sealant, extra for high temp. Then problem resolved

Silicone sealant is excellent for a gasket substitute. But in my experience it should cure for a short time before tightening the the bolts down. On really smooth surfaces the sealant can be almost entirely squeezed out of the joint.

    Greenfrog, What model is the D155? -3, -5, -6, -7, etc.

That was one of the things I was thinking! Myself also not familiar this Komatsu, only ever worked on a WA-600, but if it is a wet housing the first things I would be looking at would be the housing being over full. Two main causes I can think of are #1 problem with drain or scavenging pump system #2 plugged breather not letting air in to let oil flow out. Two other problems we had like this over the years. One was the shop we were using when they first got into doing off-highway starters did not know about wet flywheels and they were not too fussy about replacing the armature shaft seals thinking they were not that important! I schooled them on that and never had the problem again! The other one was on a Cat 980G. It burnt up two starters over the year and at first we were thinking defective starter repairs. But this machine had a Pre-Lube pump that was in the end housing of the starter. I had disassembled the starter the after second failure expecting to find a damaged seal of worn shaft but both looked fine. After a little more checking I found the real problem was a defective check vale in the Pre-Lube system. This check valve is in the output line from the pump built into the end of starter. It's job is to let oil from pump flow to the engine while Pre-lubing the engine and then close and block off oil pressure from the oil galley of the engine once engine starts. With the check valve failure the pump in the starter was subjected to full engine oil pressure while motor was not running all day.
