I have a 73 D3 cat, 1 speed reverse, I bought it cheap knowing it needed work, I pulled the transmission control valve out and the spool was froze up, no problem, but now im running into it not wanting to go into gear right. and im also having steering problems, can someone please shine some light on the situation for me??
How about some more information like Serial number? Also you say you are having "steering problems" how about a brief explanation of what they are, steers to right but not left or what ever. There are many here with years of experience who will have several ideas but they will need a little information to give them the right direction to start.
Sorry im new to the know forum, ive hit rock bottom with this, 1979 Cat D3B 1 speed reverse 3 speed forward, serial 79u2508, arrange 6s362, engine 3204, as far as the steering I had someone tell me its just locked up.
Okay, to start off you need 300 PSI out of the trans pump to get the trans to drive and at least 200 PSI to release the steering clutches. Make sure the spool is free and can be controlled. Then get the pressure up. There is a large suction screen under a cover with 3 bolts, If it gets clogged with worn clutch lining pressure will be lower and steering hard at low speed. Hope this helps. Later Bob
Bob's covered the pressure side but how about the control side. Do all your steering & transmission control linkages move freely and are they all well lubricated..? Am I correct in thinking your machine is pedal steering..? We can get on to the subject of linkage adjustment later.
The pedal steer valves have a button the pedal lever contacts. The shifter is a bit complicated making a straight line shift into a U shift and might be some of the problem. Take link off and work by hand. Later Bob
