D5C transmission temperature sending unit

rockbottom ยท 2016-02-22 09:57

On my D5C the transmission temperature gauge never seems to move off the coldest setting. Does anyone know where the sending unit is located and how to test the sensor/gauge for proper operation. thanks ahead

A serial number or at least the first part of it would be very helpful for someone to make an informed reply!

The transmission temperature sender on your D5C is a 1W-3185. It's item #66 (circled) on the attached illustration. It is fed by a single yellow coloured wire which is numbered 443. With the key on and the dash panel powered try removing the wire from the connection on the temperature sender and see what happens to the gauge. Also try grounding the wire to the machine frame and see what happens. If the gauge moves when you do either then the sender is bad. If the gauge does not move then the problem could be either a break in the 443 wire between the sender and the gauge, or a bad gauge.

thanks again to Nige. you have been very helpful to me on my D5C questions. a valuable resource

thanks ahead I found the yellow wire for the transmission sending unit, it is not connecteed to anything but when grounded to the fram the gauge functions on the gauge cluster. I found the yellow wire and when grounded to the frame the gauge works in the instrument cluster. my problem is I cannot find the transmission sending unit or where it should be located. this machine was rebuilt and it is possible they did not put a sending unit back in as the wire is hanging loose. what does the sending unit look like? if it was not installed whould there be a bolt/plug to fill the hole I see the location in the schematic Nige sent but there is no sending unit. what does the sending unit look like?

This is not the same Part Number but it should give you an idea. All transmission temp senders are pretty much the same shape give or take. The screw thread on the RH end is what fits into the housing, the electrical connection is on the LH side. There should be a bolt or a plug in the hole where the sensor should be installed.
