Got called to a job recently on a d5k dozer, can provide serial if needed. Engine runs like a top, no smoke good power. I don't have access to a computer so checked codes on screen, it had the following 590-09 1603-09 2268-05 2417-05 E 361-1 E 361- 2 E 172-1 2268-04 2225-04 1870-04 811-09 Checked all codes on cat central and didn't find anything besides the coolant temp codes that would possibly cause a no start. So anyway the machine can crank forever without starting but once a small bit of ether is sprayed it will bust right off. My first thought was injectors but the machine runs great, second thought is rail relief valve, third soleniod on Injection pump. Let me know what yall think. Tia
On that C4.4 engine usually the replacement sequence goes like this: - Rail pressure relief valve Injectors HP Pump I would suspect something in those Codes COULD possi bly be a factor, such as.... 590-9 No comms with engine ECM How many Codes/Events out of that long list above are actually Active.? The 2417-05 Code is the ether injection solenoid. Is the ether rigged up.? It's supposed to be automatically triggered when the ambient temp is below a certain level.
Thank you for your input. The ether soleniod is unplugged for some reason, owner said it would spray to much. Is there a way to tell which codes are active just by the dashboard? If so how?
See the illustration below. As you scroll through the list of Diagnostic Codes/Events on the Monitor screen pay particular attention to the LH Side of the top line looking for the letter "A". If the "A" is present the Code/Event is Active. If it is not present the Code/Event is Logged - meaning it was there once but is not Active at this time.
Awesome I appreciate it. The only active codes are 2268-04 and 2417-05. I'll look them up on cat central to see what they are.
2268-04 is the Winch Free Spool solenoid, voltage below normal. 2417-05 is the Ether Injection Control solenoid, current below normal - as a result of it being unplugged. Neither of those are going to affect the starting unless you want to try installing a new ether bottle, reconnect the solenoid and see how the engine starts in cold-ish ambient temperatures with automatic ether injection.
Awesome thank you for the information, I unplugged soleniod on top of Injection pump to send full rail pressure to rail, still didn't start going to get a buddy to read rail pressure with his computer. Thinking rail return, or Injectors.
Pressure relief valve is the cheapest. That's why we alwasy started with it. How many hours does the engine have on it.? Maybve it's just starting to get a bit tired.
They make plugs you can install on the high pressure rail to isolate each injector, when it starts with one blocked off, you found your leaker.
If you would like the procedure to check the high pressure leak off, I can post it for you, it would have all the tooling listed required to check. Serial prefix will be required for accurate info.
