D5M XL no go

DEL13 ยท 2013-12-25 08:05

I have a '97 D5M XL Touch control. Prior to this, never had any problems at all. After sitting for approximately 6 months, due to other job and other issues, it won't go forward. It reverses just fine, no issues. Checked engine oil, checked water level, checked transmission oil, topped off and started machine. Cranked right up, warmed up for 5 minutes, noticed warning light for transmission was flashing, released parking switch, lifted blade and hit forward gear. Transmission warning light, alert light flashing. Alarm sounding. Nothing. No forward movement of any kind. Would not even try to move forward. Hit decelerator, flipped into reverse, and moved to the rear. Back to forward and nothing. Got twisted around out of the woods and backed about 1/4 mile to road where loboy was waiting. Loboy was there to haul to shop to replace rollers and tracks. Figured we would check problem out in shop, not in the woods where machine was parked. Tried several times to go forward, nothing. Anybody have any ideas? First time any problem with machine in 3 years of ownership. Dozer is for personal use clearing some land I own. Not ran every day. Yea, 6 months is a long time to sit without use. In that time machine was started 2 or 3 times, ran for 5-10 minutes each time to keep batteries up. I have a job that keeps me busy for a month at a time, and family and everyday life keep me busy. Try to run dozer whenever time permits. Would like to get working to be able to load and get to shop. As stated, any help would be appreciated.

It is probably a solenoid you need to change the tyranny fluid and find which solenoid we had that problem and one was sticking.

Kind of what i was thinking, sticking valve. Guess I could open back end up and "tap" on solenoid valves. Hopefully this would "unstick" it. Does the engine have to be running for the valves to work? Or will the valves shift with just key in "on" position? It's kind of hard to try to do three things at once with just two hands.

Hello, when you were trying to go forward and alarms were going of you should have had some codes set we need those codes to help easier

How do I retrieve the codes?

Just making an uneducated guess of one possibility here, it could be that the warning light is for a restricted trans filter and that won't allow the machine to engage forward gear as a safety measure. My 550G has a very sensitive trans filter sensor that flashes and beeps in cold weather or when it's been sitting, you just let the machine warm up a while and it goes away. The machine is "dumb" so it still moves with the alarm on, if it were "smarter" it might not.

when you get the machine to the shop check for mice/rat damage to wiring. letting one set for extended periods of time gives the rodents time to set up shop inside the machine and chew on wiring. drop the belly pan and clean out the trash or nesting material. give the machine a good service and you find the problem. wilko, I have a 1998 deere 455g and a friend of mine has a 450h. both machines exhibit the same trans filter alarm that you describe in yours when they are cold. I let my 455g warm up for fifteen minutes before attempting to move it, summer or winter.

You can retrieve the codes on the dash by using the toggle between rpm hours etc. My guess would be the solenoid on the back of the trans has stuck for forward operation. Or the coil has went bad for some reason. This machine features a monitoring system that sets off the alarm. Actually the red light can flash and you can continue operation , when the light flashes and the alarm beeps time to shut er down. If you post the codes , that Nige fellow can tell you whats up and you can start from there.

Did you find out what the problem was? I have a D5M and am always looking for any info on these machines to help maintain my own. Thanks

Yes curious minds want to know for our own future reference.
