Transmission gets hot after 1/2 hr pushing.fluid is fine, could be the Torque converter or transmission, check for metal in hyd filter that’s fine, also the speed sensor code came on
Would you like to start with a Serial Number.? Also what is the “speed sensor code” and is it Active.? Any previous history of what led up to where you are now regarding the powertrain heating up.?
AKD02006..code is not active, machine goes very slow like transmission is slipping or torque converter is slipping..CAT computer says everything is fine but it’s not
Even if the Code is not Active what Code Number is it.? So to be clear the SERV CODE icon on your display only lights up during the panel test when you first turn the key on and then goes out and stays out. Correct.?
Correct.. I will have to look at codes tomorrow
OK, what about some back story regarding how this problem developed.? Did it come on suddenly or has it been getting worse gradually over time.? Also. What oil are you using in the transmission.? Has the oil and filter been changed recently.? When the oil was changed was the suction strainer removed and cleaned.? How about the screen in the drain line from the converter.? How does the oil look regarding colour.? Clear and bright or dark and cloudy.? Does it smell burned.?
Codes can wait for now. If the SERV CODE icon stays off that confirms nothing is Active.
CAT oil 30 weight, everything is up to par. Also, all torque converters have a sprag (one way roller clutch) that the stator is going to "grab onto" (mesh) If your sprag is broken, free wheeling, it will NOT have torque multiplication…and be very sluggish.. Consequently, if your sprag is "locked up", this will indeed limit your top RPM speed, cause severe overheating, and sometimes turn the outer shell of the converter blue..mine dozer is very sluggish and doesn’t reach top speed in any of the gears and after 1/2 hr of pushing dirt the transmission light came in saying hot and couldn’t touch transmission 4 hrs later
I'm familiar with torque converter stator sprag clutches on machines such as haul trucks that are equipped with a converter lockup clutch. The stator has to be able to freewheel when the lockup clutch is engaged. Unfortunately your tractor does not have that type of stator. Instead it has a fixed stator. Attached the SysOp for the converter. TBH a converter with a sprag clutch stator will not drive at all if the sprag clutch fails. The usual first operator complaint if a sprag clutch fails is "low engine power".
Some more info on exactly how this problem first presented itself and how it has developed since then (and how long that took) would be welcome. How many total hours are on the machine right now and to the best of your knowledge has the converter ever been overhauled.?
9200hrs and no overhaules.. test drive the machine two weeks ago b4 I bought it the next day no power in travel speed and transmission overheated
I'm going to suggest a few things. First up I imagine that the tractor doesn't have an Operation & Maintenance Manual in the pocket behind the seat. You really need that book but they can be downloaded from Cat for around $50. Go to - https://catpublications.com/ Click on "Continue as Guest" Type SEBU7418 in the box and click search. Something like the illustration below should appear. If you buy a download it will be on your PC within 5 minutes.
Next I suggest to lift the floor plate in the cab so that you can see the short driveshaft connecting the converter output to the transmission input. With the engine is idling and the transmission in neutral that shaft should be spinning. Engage any gear and it should stop dead, not slow down and stop - stop absolutely dead. If you shift from one gear to another the shaft should start spinning for a split second then stop dead again. Try it in every gear forward and reverse. Does it behave like I explained above.?
Now it's time for some pressure testing. You will need a gauge that reads up to 150psi. Also if you don't have one it's time to get hold of an infra red temperature gun. They are only about $20 and can be a life saver when chasing overheating issues. The Test Points are under a cover on the RH side of the machine. Connect the gauge to Test Point "M". With the machine cold set the engine at High Idle RPM and measure the maximum converter inlet pressure. The pressure should be no more than than 130psi. With the gauge on the same test point warm up the machine to normal operating temperature and test the converter inlet pressure again. It should be within the range of 100 ± 10 psi. Connect the gauge to Test Point "N". With the machine at normal operating temperature apply the brakes, release the parking brake, and select 3rd speed forward. Accelerate the engine to maximum RPM and measure the pressure. It should be in the range of 65 ± 10 psi. Report your results.
The short driveshaft does exactly like you say. I haven’t looked into pressure yet, tomorrow I’m gunna pull belly pan see if I can see anything different..would the speed sensor make the machine go slow like brakes are dragging
Only if the Code was Active - SERV CODE permanently illuminated on the panel in other words.
Serv code comes up when running. Code 036,0175.04,0091.02..code 113,0368.02,0671.02.. I almost looked at the small driveshaft again from Neturlal to 1.5F it spins very slow dozer wants to move,2.0F,2.5F,3.0F,3.5F they all stop dead but 3.0,3.5 barley moves dozer like something is slipping.1.5R,2.0R netural to gear spins very slow, 2.5R-3.5R stops dead. Trans seem to get hot by the touch haven’t pressure test it yet, what would be the same oil CAT oil 30 weight to use something cheaper so I don’t waste $1000 on oil if I end up pulling trans or torque
Are all four of those Codes active.? When you scroll through them does SERV CODE stay on for each one.? The important ones are :- 113.0671.02 - #1 Transmission output speed sensor data erratic, intermittent or incorrect. 113.0368.02 - Auto-shift switch data erratic, intermittent or incorrect. 036.0091.02 - Incorrect throttle switch inputs. The other is:- 036.0175.04 - Engine oil temp sensor short to ground. Attached are the troubleshooting procedures for all four.
You can use any SAE30 oil that includes the statement "meets or exceeds the requirements of Caterpillar TO-4 specification" on the Data Sheet. All the major oil companies (Mobil, Shell, Conoco, etc) produce a TO-4 spec oil. NOTE: Be careful because there is also an SAE50 version of TO-4. You don't want that.
