D6h series 2

4730 · 2021-09-29 21:04

Have a 1990 d6h series ii the darn engine is heating after an hour of working it. Was working perfect last week but all of a sudden getting to warm. Goes to 210 on gauge. was always at 180 before. Transmission is staying at 170. Can water pump be going? It will cool off in 2 minutes is let stand and high idle. Rad is clean outside. Belts tight on fan.

could very well be shoot top and bottom of radiator with IR temp gun and if more than 10 degree temperature difference there is an issue…and will likely be. Can be water pump, or internal clogging, or a combo of both especially talking about a 30 year old machine. Also check your radiator cap and replace if necessary. if it doesn’t hold pressure it can cause overheating. It’s the $15 part that gets overlooked a lot but can make a real difference.

We put thermostat in Pot of hot water brought temp up to 200 never opened. Took a screw driver and pushed open. Now it seems to work once water hits 180. Wonder if that is the problem will be putting new one in.

toss it and install new, sounds like it’s probably the issue. Another part that can cause headache far out of proportion to its cost.

Going to order new rad cap to thanks

Good deal let us know if those two items fix your issue.

check and see if you have bubbles in the radiator , you may be losing a head gasket. my d5h did the same thing , head gasket

  7. #747302021-09-30 08:04

If it is a head gasket how bad of a job is that?

  8. #8catman132021-10-01 12:21

i sent it to my cat dealer , did not have time to do it , had them go thru the head while it was off, if you are good at wrenching not to bad , if you have a shed to nose it into to keep it out of the weather while you do it

  9. #947302021-10-06 23:13

Well I guess the head is Going to have to come off. Hopefully just a gasket. After 10 min warm up air bubbles in rad.

  10. #10catman132021-10-07 23:50

mine was just a gasket , sounds like that is all you have to to do also, have the head gone thru while you are at it

From the state of the ferrules that seal the coolant passages it doesn't appear as though it got extremely hot otherwise they would look wrinkled and shrunk. That being the case I wonder why the head gasket failed.?

  13. #13Bluox2021-10-08 11:29

What does the head look like? Pull the spacer plate and gasket. Bob

Wonder if just old age machine 1990. The thermostat was sticking to

That is what I thought I saw, you have a problem with that liner or the block. Lets see the head and pull the spacer plate. Bob

  17. #1747302021-10-08 23:17

Sorry not sure what the spacer plate is? Not sure why it looks like three groves to top of cyl. When you use fingernail you don't feel them.

  18. #18Bluox2021-10-09 00:42

You see the damage on top of liner above the scratches? Spacer plate is between block and head gasket ,pull off gasket and plate will come off block. Bob

  19. #1947302021-10-09 09:48

Haven't had a chance to pull spacer plate off yet. Is there a gasket for that spacer plate to? What seals it?

  20. #20Mobiltech2021-10-09 09:58

Get ready to do a full inframe on that. When you pull the liners you will probably find block deck wear allowed the liner to drop and then blew the head gasket. In that case the block will need to be cut and shimmed. How long have you owned this cat?

  21. #2147302021-10-09 10:05

We have only had for few years maybe put 600hrs on. Long story short we had heating problems in transmission ended up being a sticky brake. That would heat up whole machine. So not sure if previous owner got rid of because of the heating so not sure how hot it got.

  22. #2247302021-10-09 10:06

It was working awsome till last week was using it. It always ran at 180 then all of a sudden was up to 210.

  23. #23JD955SC2021-10-09 10:40

This thread is a prime example of how a simple problem turns into a full blown nightmare of never ending repair because you always find bigger and bigger issues.

  24. #24Mobiltech2021-10-10 10:09

I find a lot of head gasket problems if repaired correctly end up in a full rebuild due to deck wear. I also see a lot of people saying “ just put a head gasket in and see what happens” . You might get away with that if you don’t put many hours on in a year. You also have that suspicious liner mark that is something I would want to look at. Pulling a piston and liner at this point is easy but your parts list will grow substantially.

  25. #2547302021-10-10 13:43

Ya wonder what those lines are? Was pretty Carboned up.can't feel the lines with fingernail

  26. #26Mobiltech2021-10-10 20:28

Looks like something imbedded in the top of the piston. Probably came in through the intake valve.

  27. #27Bluox2021-10-10 22:09

My guess would be that piece of metal looking object that's between the piston and the liner right at the bottom of the scratch. Pull the head gasket off. Bob

Are those rings around the valves indented or just a clean spot from the linners. If indented. Inframe and cut block for shims

  32. #3247302021-10-13 09:29

No rings that you can feel

  34. #3447302021-10-13 21:21

Think going to take liners out. Can a guy get these out in the dozer and get back in? Or do you have to pull motor?

  35. #35Bluox2021-10-13 21:51

Do you have tooling to deal with liners ? Do it look like you can get pan off? Are the block pitted where the water grommets go? Kinda looks like that block has been sleeved already. You may be ahead to get a reman motor. Bob

  36. #3647302021-10-13 22:17

Yes the block is pitted where water grommets go. No don't have the tools. And yes I think your right it does look like spacers under liner. This thing is testing me for sure. Not sure what a remain engine is worth might be worth it though

  37. #3747302021-10-14 17:26

Sorry if boring you guys this project is taking forever! Took out piston that I thought was Leary this what found

  38. #3847302021-10-14 17:27

Can't believe it didn't totally pile up

  39. #3947302021-11-18 21:06

Does anyone know how to check piston oil cooler jets? Is there a way to see if they spray correct on under piston?
