D6M, blown oil cooler!

MUGLY ยท 2013-05-29 12:35

Working on a Cat D6M, and recently had the trans, torque converter, and oil cooler pulled after a catastrophic failure in the trans. Unit was put back together and during a hour long test drive, the oil cooler blew sending milk out the overflow tube on the radiator. Have torn it all down and confirmed the break inside the oil cooler, which I believe was replaced with a genuine CAT piece during the trans rebuild. What are the odds this piece was faulty to begin with? Looped a pressure gauge into the circuit at the oil cooler and found up to 60 psi of pressure during a brief test run, is this normal? Needing some pointers on how to figure out if this is a freak coincidence, or if the system is being over pressurized. Don't want to throw in a new cooler only to have it pop again. Thank you in advance!

Call whoever did the work and tell them to "get with the program". New cooler, antifreeze, oil and flush of system. Later Bob

Convertor outlet preasure on D7H is 60 psi + or - 10psi Convertor outlet goes directly to the oil cooler on the d7h.

curious what "broke" inside the cooler. did a tube crack? did the rubber seals come off the end of the tubes? did you press a tube and seal assembly into an old casting or buy the complete unit? provide part number or serial number please....theironoracle

Hmmm 60 psi sounds really high for a cooler. The outlet relief valve is to maintain that pressure in the t/c and the oil leaving should be a lot less as it dumps back to sump ! I will double check at work tomorrow if I get a minute as maybe my brain is off after 14hrs of work today....... Hope its not a case of find the missing plug/blockage in the system from the clean out

Pressure in the cooler shouldn't be more than 15-20 psi, perhaps a forgotten plug or something like that in a line?

big ben your right, 60 psi is the outlet relief valve. The transmission lubrication preasure on the 7 is 31 psi, and this oil comes from the oil cooler.

Not exactly sure about a 6M but oil that exits the cooler goes to lube and then back to transmission sump. If you checked the oil pressure after the TC outlet relief valve and it is 60 psi you have a blockage downstream of the cooler. If you checked and got 60 psi before the TC outlet this is normal charge pressure for the TC. P5 (lube pressure) should be 10-15 (maybe a hair more) psi approx at operating temp. That lube oil is sent the gear train on the back of the engine if memory serves me. I would find pressure tap for P5 and blow shop air into the test port. Could be tricky to hear air escaping in gear train were it should be. It may just go backwards to cooler. Don't know if it would be a blockage or a bushing turned or etc? Hope this helps! Z
