Half driveshaft turn? Wow, spiders are gone I reckon? Was it open or a locker?

  2. #2petepilot2019-10-06 18:30

not a locker i haven`t looked at it yet

Wonder if there is any oil left in it?

  4. #4petepilot2019-10-06 23:41

pretty sure its not empty i`ll know in the morning

Dana S110 or S135 or Dana 80 and what are you pulling? Don’t see how one can go out like that.

I've heard of the pinion bearings going out on them but that would sure be leaking noticeably at the input... at least for a while... not to mention all the end play you'd have on the driveshaft

Have to scrape all the metal off the magnet and jbweld it back into place! 1/2 turn? wowsa, maybe the pinion is walking back and forth due to a loose pinion nut giving the wrong backlash.

just pulled the plug ` not out of oil but low lots of ugly stuff on the magnet` something is well on the way out `pinion seems tight no back&forth mvmt.&the seal is leaking. never tackled one of these but am about to get my first lesson think its an 80

My money is on worn out spiders / thrust bearings. I'll bet ring and pinion are salvageable.

    hope so` those are pricey

  12. #12petepilot2019-10-10 21:48

T'is but a mere flesh wound. There should be thousands of miles still on that diff, unlike this one........ I'd still be interested to see what you find though.

one in the middle has had a problem for a while the slack in mine tell me i`m gonna forget it goose it to hard and really make a mess

Chunky stuff is not good. I dropped the oil in the front diff on a 960 loader once and it sounded like marbles being dropped in the pan. It started out as a routine service and got worse.

If you see a f450 seting it will because of the rear end. If it was mine i would push it in to a shop and pull it apart if i liked it. I have junked several because of the rear ends being out with bad houseings.
