Dead Case 1080

Hello forum members! I am writing this for my 85 year old father in law who has been in the excavation business for most of his life, and needs help but is not very internet savvy. He owns a 1985 CASE 1080 excavator that has sat outdoors on a piece of property in NJ for the last 10 years without being started. Recently he wanted to get it off the property and could not get it moved. As you can expect lots of seals are leaking, hoses are chewed through by animals, in general he can't get it to move. He brought in a repair man who has spent a lot of time and money who managed to get the engine started but could not get the drive to engage and turn the tracks. Evidently they filled the hydraulic reservoir but it all leaked out before they could get it moved. The current situation is that the cost for repair could easily exceed $40,000 (or so he has been told) as one repair could lead to another failure, also there are no longer parts available (or so he has been told). He has recently been told he could have it dismantled (torched apart) for tens of thousands, or craned out for a similar high dollar amount. I can't vouch for the competency of the mechanic, my in-laws are very value oriented and may have gone with the cheapest guy, not the person who could come up with a quick solution. Bottom line is that he just needs the unit off the property in order to facilitate a real estate sale, he has no interest in getting the unit running and is even willing to give it away to anyone that could come and get it, but so far everyone wants money. I asked him if there was any way to disconnect the drive so it could be "dragged" by another machine, and he mentioned that he was trying to disable the brake with no luck. There is a bulldozer on-site that runs and could be used to help. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Generally the final drives on excavators can be taken apart and will free wheel. Take the cover off and see what you see. That would be my last option though, get somebody else to take it away for free or cheap. If it were just about anywhere in the country but NY/NJ or California coast, somebody would probably want it for parts. Even in NJ I'd think you'd get somebody to cut it for scrap. Don't let Spudmonkey see this post...
