Changed final drive oil on a model 80 excavator, one side had gear oil, the other had hydraulic oil and was plum full. I believe the motor is leaking into the planetary. Called the Deere dealer, and they won’t rebuild it and none available (only would recommend buying motor and final drive as complete unit.) Has anyone had luck having them rebuilt or know of a reputable source for used final drives. Thanks
They're rebuildable at about 25% of new. Seem like the seal is cactus so only the hydraulic motor need fixing and can be removed separately. A new seal and 2 bearings replaced maybe all the parts required which a good supplier should have on the shelf. The motor could have a tag on it which you can use to get all the info you need.
Thanks, I’ll look into it more.
Looks to me like you can service that seal from the back end of the motor? See attached.
Is L the seal your thinking?, I havent been around Much if any construction equipment, mostly just farm equipment.
Yes
Seal installation tip as told to me by an automatic transmission repair God: pack Vaseline or white lithium grease in the space around the little spring that holds pressure on the seal lip, keeps that spring from popping off when you tap the seal into place. More useful when installing the seal into a blind spot where you can't see the back of the seal, but still good practice.
