Diesel seeping into oil…Injectors or pump? cat 3204

PEVO · 2018-11-05 10:41

started up dozer the other day. D4H ser. 8PB01320 and low oil pressure flickered a bit and idle then went off. Didnt think much of it. Started it again this last weekend to push out a willow tree out of a low stock tank and noticed the low oil lt stayed on again a bit longer. Checked oil to find it well over full. im assuming diesel is thinning the oil...hence the engine oil pressure lt. flickering for 3-4 sec after starting at idle when cold. Looks like i got diesel leaking into the engine from some where...but where? This is a CAT 3204DI engine with pencil injectors (9600hr on meter). Are these injectors prone to leaking or could it be the injection pump or lift pump?? Whats the best procedure or list of things to ck and in what order? Id hate to just go out and buy 4 new injectors just to find out a pump is leaking instead...who knows maybe they need replacing anyway?? Thanks

Transfer pump seals maybe. Could be injection pump but probability is low. Nozzles likely but would check the under cover connections and tubing, should be obvious.

Injection pump. If your injectors were leaking down then your engine would be hydro locked or the fuel system would be losing its prime. The injection pump has a lip seal on the front which will pass fuel into the crank case via the timing gear cover.

Lines feed thru side of rocker boxes, can leak there.

Forgot to add...engine starts right-a-way hot. If sitting a week or so...will catch after 4-6 sec or so cranking. Does blow quite a bit of black smoke...no blue. Seems to be sluggish spooling up thou.

Same issue here. Lift pump and injector lines have been replaced. Still making oil.

Different machine but, I just had a similar problem with my case 350. In my case it was the lip seals on the pump driveshaft leaking.

Doesn’t that pump have the telltale drip tubes on it like the 3208.?? If the front seals r going bad, they drip from the tubes/hoses connected to the pump..

    Only if not stopped up

Well here's a update: checked under valve cover no obvious leak detected. Took transfer pump off had it tested...it was leaking. I thought hell yea i got this. $150 later for a new pump and 80 bux for oil change....back in business. End of story, right?....NOPE after a few hours running...yup, oil level climbing again. DAMN!...only thing left is the injector pump. Had pump rebuilt. Tech said pump had wear consistent with a 9000hr engine. Got it back running. Only ran it a couple of hours or so...so far no extra oil.

Maybe yours is fixed PEVO. I had a diesel engine making oil and realized it had a miss at idle also. Turned out to be a cracked valve seat. I guess anytime that hole wasn't firing it was just running down into crankcase.
