looking at 2 loaders one a 530 and 1 550 do they have problems i have heard that trannys are weak link any ideas thanks

We have had a 550 since 1989. The major problem we have had with it has been the final drives(planetaries). Some of this could be due to operator abuse over the years. Only transmission problems we have had are leaks on the control valves that are relatively easy to access with transmission in frame. Ours has the Cummins NTA 855 engine. We also had a couple of about the same vintage with the IH V800 engine. I don't recall where one ended up, one was parked and used for parts then in a push to "clean up the quarry" it was cut up for scrap iron. I believe that one was originally parked due to engine problems. I guess my suggestion would be to sample the oils in the finals before making a purchase.
