Earth Moving Job With Excavators–Good Idea?

i trench. i don't move earth by the yard. so, when i have to do work by the yard and move it a ways it just doesn't click for me. i have been asked to bid an earth moving job and would like to know if i can do it with as little rented equipment as possible, so i am wondering if you all think this could work. i need to excavate a 75' x 300' pit ten feet deep and move the material a half mile. i then fill that pit with 1000 yards or waste material from about one mile away and place the original earth back on top. i hoped to do with with two volvo ec330's with big buckets, a couple of articulated trucks, and a d6 size dozer. what do you all think?

Sounds like it will work. If you are not comfortable by the yard, I can give you a bid for it.

Don't know where you are located or the kind of ground conditions you will encounter. That is why my fine print that goes with every bid has a rock clause, unsatisfactory soil clause, dewatering clause, and every other item I can think of to cover my little tender back side. Suggest you do so also. I suggest you figure out how long you estimate it will take to job in hours for each machine, multiple that by the rate for each machine. That should get you close to a REAL number. Than watch some fool with nothing to do come along and take it for a third of what you bid it at. I don't know what you have for equipment, but if you rent a bunch of stuff the rental man will make all of the money on the job.

i am not going after this with scrapers so that i don't have to rent as much equipment.

Do you have to move the dirt a 1/2 mile? Could you excavate 1/2 the pit, put the dirt on the other half, put in 1/2 the waste, cover it with the dirt you dig from the second 1/2? You're only digging 10' deep, a 330 should be able to pile 20' high. The fewer times you handle the dirt, and the lesser distance you move it, the less money you spend.

that could work. i will think about it.

I think two 330s is unnecessary... I dug a pit for underground detention 50x300 in 2 days with a 200...

X2 maybe a hoe or other dozer to strip off what you need for cover. If the waste material is close to where your going to be dumping the spoils you could have a hoe out there for a return load.

I normally just calculate how much the crew costs per day and then figure out how much we can move per day. Say its $5,000 a day and each truck can make 3 trips per hour thats roughly 480 cy per truck per day and you have you have two trucks so I would figure on 960 cy per day at $5000 a day works out to $5.21 a cy. You would have to play around with the number or trucks (cy per day) and the support equipment to find out what the cheapest price to move it is. It may make sense to not rent another truck and just have your machines spend an extra day on the job or something like that. I also would figure in a loader as a floater to go to which ever side (cut or fill) is running behind to keep your production up.
