Easy, fast and safe solution for excavator transportation – Sleipner.

TTSl ยท 2012-05-24 03:38

Could you make better use with the time spent in excavator transportation? Do you think undercarriage wears out too often? With Sleipner system you can increase machine utilization by cutting the transit times of an excavator by as much as 85 %. Time savings lead directly to increased production. No more driving on tracks. Walking the excavators causes massive wear to the undercarriage. With Sleipner, the undercarriage life is doubled or even tripled! This greatly reduces the maintenance and repair cost during excavator life. Our product range currently covers transportation systems for excavators from 30 to 550 metric tonnes. If you were worried about undercarriage wear, you wouldn't have bought a Komatsu in the first place.

Yair . . . How long does it take to fit the wheels and how many blokes and what gear do you need? Just curious. Cheers.

  8. #8stumpjumper832012-05-26 06:52

scrub puller, i take it you didnt watch the youtube clip... You all need to make them for smaller machines as well, like down to the 200 class.

  9. #9diggerop2012-05-26 08:23

Have a look at their web site as well as the video. They make them for 50 ton too 550 ton.

  10. #10Nige2012-05-26 08:27

Answer to your question. The excavator operator does it all. The wheel units have lifting points on them that he can pick up using a bucket tooth. He sets the units in position and then walks into them, then swings the upper frame round so the wheels are at the rear. After that all he needs is a truck with a bit of soft material in the bed.

Here's a video of our EX3600 shovel being hauled up a ramp by one of our 789's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYClDnce75Q&feature=context-chv

Congrats Nige. You are truly an asset to the forum. I'd like to see your operation firsthand one day.

  13. #13Nige2012-05-26 12:11

I think the really neat thing about the Sleipners is that the excavator/shovel operator can steer them (using the machine swing function) a bit like steering the back end of a lowboy with a steerable rear bogie. In that way the excavator tracks the vehicle that is towing it pretty much dead on. You can see it right at the end of the video.

Yair . . . thanks fellers. I don't watch much Youtube; it burns up my data allocation. Cheers.

Also note, that if the Sleipner units remain in the same place nearby the working excavator between transports (as the process is designed to), the excavator operator only needs to walk the excavator back on the Sleipner units to begin next transport operation. No set-up times, no manual work and nobody needs to exit their cabins.

By the looks of the "squat" on the Truck rear end/tyres, the axle. suspension &/or tyre loadings are being pushed to or past their limits.....& possible shock loading on the truck body/mounts/suspension may prove ti have interesting "impacts" over time.

Before selling a Sleipner to a customer, we always make sure, that the customer has compatible vehicles for towing the excavator - Sleipner combination. In a usual situation 65 - 75 % of the excavator weight is on the Sleipner units, and the remaining 25-35 % on the truck. A quick calculation for the combination posted by Nige: Ex3600 - 360 tonnes Cat 789C - Payload capacity 177 tonnes Material on truck: approximately 20 % of payload = 35 tonnes Weight on Sleipner: 360 x 0,65 = 234 tonnes Weight on Truck: 360 x 0,35 + 35 = 161 tonnes There should be no problem to use this combination even in a longer period of time.

  21. #21Nige2012-05-28 09:08

I'd also point out that our Sleipner set-up is speed limited to 10km/h in order to ensure safety. Even so that's still a heck of a lot faster than tramming the excavator.

Take a look at the GPS data from a transport operation performed at Eisenerz, Austia, during Sleipner commissioning. Used combination: Sleipner E120 + Komatsu PC1250-7 + Komatsu HD 785. Click on "Statistics mode" on lower right corner of the window to see detailed data of the action. http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=1636678&code=6b39e1c573fc05e6c9500bea91ba8834

That has me thinking... damn dot would never aprove it though...

  24. #24TTSl2012-07-05 08:30

What are you thinking? Please share it with us or send e-mail to [email protected] so we can discuss about the possibilities.

  25. #25gravelwasher2012-07-05 17:21

Is there an importer for these in the USA and any contact info? I could use smaller a set of them. I could also see a run-a-way going down a hill.

  26. #26stumpjumper832012-07-05 21:26

oh, alot of the 200 thru 300 size machines have quick couplers on the buckets, so you make a 5th wheel pin as an attachement in place of the bucket, now you have a secure connection between hoe and tractor. One could even have a set of air brakes on the axles of the sleipner that would connect to the glad hands on the truck making brakes a possibility for when your on an improved surface. What I was really thinking as a whole new way to transport a large excavator down the highway... but the damn dot would have a field day. But even if they were not legal of on road use there are alot of jobs when your building developments to building logging roads that a quick means of moving the excavator would be handy, especially if it didnt involve a trailer. Think extra heavy duty tow dolly, pintle hitch, so you can pull with your tandem or triaxle...

Not as far as I know. You deal direct with the factory in Finland. I know we did. But they are a small company and extremely innovative.

  28. #28TTSl2012-07-06 07:48

Unfortunately even Nige can be wrong about something. We have recently developed a dealership with a company called HSM Tire. The right person to be in contact with is Kuba Szczypiorski. Email: [email protected]

  29. #29Nige2012-07-06 15:58

Let me re-phrase that ............. when we bought our Sleipners there wasn't a dealer in the US for them .............

  30. #30gravelwasher2012-07-06 16:38

Thank you. I'll email him and see if they will work for us.

My late neighbor had a set up like that he made for moving an old Cat track loader back inthe day THey had a hole burned in the bottome of the bucket and a 5th wheel king pin with a threaded back side to thread in the bucket. They took an old tank retriever trailer axle and mad pockets for the scarifiers to fit into. He would back up to the axle and put the scarifiers in the pockets and pin them in and put te King pin i nthe bucket. He had an old 6x6 army truck with a 5th weel and an old single axle tractor. They moved it many miles that way. He did tell me one time they had either a boom line or ripper line blow and it hit the ground. I wouldnt worry about a runaway if an operator was in the cab just raise the boom and let the traks hit the ground.
