EC travel motor

Rich leveillee · 2022-08-29 06:23

We Have an EC140C With a travel motor that will not stay stay up to speed. This particular travel motor is controlled by pump number 11 when you try to get it to move in one direction or the other you can build 5000 pounds hydraulic pressure but it will not move until you have it wrapped up to full speed the other travel mode works fine. We thought the travel motor was bad because the gear loop was all silvery like metal was ground up so we replaced it, but no difference please advise where to go from here. One more note the swing motor also seems to jog when you have full speed rotating left or rotating right and it's right and the hydraulic pressure on the screen jumps around wildly it's history in the diagnostics shows 12 times since 2012 that it gets an error code of and "massive hydraulic system failure" The millivolts on the proportioning valve that controls the volume of pump number one also seems to fluctuate. It is confusing to me that the pump pressure will build to 5000 pounds when you activate this travel motor but you get very very slow movement or none at all until you rev it up to full RP m's.

Good day Rich Have you checked to see what errors have been logged ? also is there any history of failures or additional extra circuits installed. The common component to both swing and one crawler is one of the hydraulic pumps. Come back and I will try to help out. Kind regards Uffex

Remove the case drain filter, pour it out in a clean bucket. No metal should be present. If you have bronze sparkles, you have a problem. But, before that, let's look at simple issues first. Have you set your track chain tension? Raise one track off the ground. Measure from the bottom of the track frame to the track pad. For a 140 you should be around 10½ to 11" if i remember correctly. Excessive track tension will drag a track down. What material are you working in? Rock and clay are one thing but sand will tighten up tracks like you wouldn't believe. If these 2 simple things don't show us anything, we'll go back to troubleshooting deeper. Just don't want to send you down the rabbit hole first thing. Good luck

We had two pressure senor codes, changed the sensors for boom up and down. All good now also there has been a code intermittent since 2012. It has been set 12 times. PSID 96-04 and PWM 9101-05 and PWM 9102-05. IT appears the main pump was removed at one time because the lines, electric and hyd. Were all tagged. Ser# is VCE140CL00110504

  4. #4funwithfuel2022-08-30 08:40

So 96-04 is fuel level sensor circuit. Voltage below .5 volts for 3 seconds or more. 9101 &9102 say that return signal to V-ECU is less than ⅛ of a volt. Could be that they were unplugged for testing purposes. When did they last error out, recently or a while back?

Good day I suggest try the machine in manual mode to see if that resolves the issue. Is there a chance of wrong connection at the pumps. Kind regards Uffex

Volvo ser# VCE140CL00110504 There has been a code intermittent 12 different times, PWM9101-12 also PSID 96-04. The unit is in Maine, will be headed up Friday night. But there are 2 men there doing work during the week. They are not good with this kind of trouble.

  7. #7Rich leveillee2022-08-31 04:30

Some of the errors are all the way back to 2012. The 9101 in particular. Would have to check pumps for wrong connections.

well, Im up in Maine, and i tried to put the machine in "manual mode" and immediately got an ECU failure code. Put the switch back in "auto" replaced FUSE 7 and everything seemed cool, put the switch in "manual", blew it again. when i traced it down to the ECU. checked thoroughly the harnesses found no flawes. i am suspecting the ECU has an issue. please advise.

  9. #9funwithfuel2022-09-03 19:46

OK, you've got a problem in the switch or the armrest. That switch takes the V-ECU out of the equation and brings the pump online to about 80%. Yes you have a short, no it's not your issue.

  10. #10uffex2022-09-04 06:02

Good day When you switch to manual mode you by-pass the VECU which is normal to present a failure for that unit so I suggest do not be alarmed or condemn the unit for that reason. Kind regards Uffex

thank you going to check more wire and the switch today 9/4

  12. #12Rich leveillee2022-09-04 08:25

BTW both pump proportion coils show 17.6-18.2 ohms

  13. #13funwithfuel2022-09-04 10:01

    How are the tracks?

  14. #14Rich leveillee2022-09-04 12:46

    80%,give or take

  15. #15funwithfuel2022-09-04 13:22

I was referring to the chain adjustment. That is critical to proper travel

  16. #16Rich leveillee2022-09-04 19:24

well here goes, checked the "manual/auto " switch, all good, checked all the connecters, harnesses, sockets, diodes, resistors, and the ECU sockets. found nothing wrong. put it all back together AND guess what, it will not blow a fuse and the "manual/Auto" switch now works! i obviously disturbed somthing from its slumber, but have no idea. i pulled, pushed, yanked, cussed, at every harness i could get to. no luck. ***! when i put the machine in "manual Mode' the track issuse seemed to go away. going tomorrow to try driving it around. was getting dark out and i was in need of some nourishment. help!

  17. #17Rich leveillee2022-09-04 19:27

has about 6" of sag at the center carrier roller. it would surge and have low power in "auto", the surging quit in "manual"

  18. #18funwithfuel2022-09-04 19:46

In the service menu, you should be able to access the pilot pressure screen. Please monitor pressure to L&R travel

  19. #19Rich leveillee2022-09-04 20:26

yes i can, the pressure on the left hand track floats around, but in "manual" mode it is steady. also the millivolts on PWM Pump 1 is all over the place. Of course in "manual" it shows zero.

  20. #20funwithfuel2022-09-04 21:19

Do you have a partner who can operate while you feel for a pulse? What I'm getting to is, after the tracks are loosened up a bit, you need to keep a hand on the case drain filter or the hoses feeding it. With one track off the ground roll that track slowly and pick up speed slowly. Then swing her around and do the same test on the other track. What we don't want or need is a pulse or surge that can be felt. By the way, have you poured out the contents of the case drain filter yet?

  21. #21Rich leveillee2022-09-04 22:40

had to order new filter. should be here Tues.

  22. #22Rich leveillee2022-09-05 13:39

There is no pulsing or surging in the lines to drain. also the erratic operation of LH track is not present in "manual" mode. it returns in "auto" mode. I have also observed now the PUMP 1and 2 pressures stay at around 5900 LBs no matter what engine speed or what you are working as far as hydraulics are concerned. pull the sensors on the main pumps values are zero. but it is now raining pretty well so we have returned to camp. Oh yes one more thing, the pressure sensors on other circuits show between 350-600 psi when being operated, but the main pumps still show high pressure. confusing.

  23. #23funwithfuel2022-09-05 14:03

There are high and low pressure sensors on the C series machine. It sounds like someone put the wrong ones on the pump. Either that or they've been failed. It's weird that they both failed. That's why I think that they're the wrong ones.

  24. #24Rich leveillee2022-09-06 12:16

They were working correctly before I before I started to find the short circuit in the auto manual switch. I put all the panels back in place I can place and the V ECU back in after cleaning all the connectors when we restarted the machine this is when we noticed the maximum reading on both sensors. We had never disconnected the sensors at the pump. I did disconnect the connectors at the PWM sole BUM solonoids on the pump found one of them had a little bit of green on the connections and clean them up, but that was it.

  25. #25funwithfuel2022-09-06 12:22

What's the pressure reading with the machine off, then running @Idle with safety down, then safety up, then throttle increase, then gradually pulling a function?

  26. #26Rich leveillee2022-10-16 07:31

The pressure sensors With the key on the engine not running pump number 1 54 80 p s I, pump number 2 zero. With the key on and the engine running the same readings. Purchase new senses from a Volvo dealer at the tune of $211 each, comma installed the sensors and they worked for approximately 2 minutes and then went back to the same readings as I had before replacing the sensors For the 2 minutes that they were operating they showed 650 pounds at idle.
