EMERGENCY question – How to take front wheel off of JD 510 Backhoe

Steve G. ยท 2011-09-17 14:31

hey guys, its been a while - im in the field right now trying to take the front wheel off of my backhoe. we got the nuts off of the studs and took the studs out as well - it seems impossible to get the wheel off though! We have tried sledge hamming, heating and lubricating - it wont even budge. Its a 2 wheel drive. Any ideas on trying to get the wheel off of the hub? it seems like its seized.... btw, the reason im trying to get it off is because the tire is not holding air - i don't think it was punctured, i think the seal around the edges where it meets the wheel is broken - maybe we could just slip a tube in under the tub less tire? Anyway, im out here sitting on the fender trying to think of the next best step to approach the situation... 2hrs away from home. Any advice please let me know. Thanks!

Try putting the nuts back on the wheel but loose enough so when you drive the machine around you might be able to break it free that way... you need to drive it a little bit and always keep checking it to make sure the lug nuts have not become too loose, or tighten back up taking away the gap you left for it to break loose.... I figure once you go forward then give it a hard turn to left or right should put a good strain on it to pop off, having the nuts loosen just right amount should work out good....

I've seen em stuck like that before, but a bfh usually solved the problem..... can you support the frontend off the ground with the bucket hydraulics, turn the steering wheel all the way one way, put a block of wood against the back of the rim, turn the wheel back using the steering hydraulic's to pop it loose?

Take off the wheel bearing nut and remove hub and all then take it back to the shop and heat up the wheel

better break the tire down before you heat it!!! there is a video link here some where about that

Never had a reason to try it, just thinking out loud here, but if you have enough chain you might be able to swing the hoe around to that side and fasten from the bucket to the wheel.
