Excavator blade – what are the plates attached used for?

Please can anyone tell me what these plates attached to each end of my blade are for? On a Kobelco SKO27. Thanks.

    Looks like pads that can be flipped down for working off asphalt/concrete.

    They sure look like outrigger feet that swing down in position to keep the cutting edge of the blade from gouging the surface as hvy 1 ton mentioned . Like if you were lifting or digging using the blade as an outrigger on pavement or asphalt and don't want to scuff up the surface . My best guess ?
