I am a beginner to the design process. What all should be considered in the design of an excavator? how to start off the design? what are the major parts need more consideration? can anyone help me out.
major components of an excavator are the track frame the slew ring house cab engine hydro pumps main arm and dipper followed by a bucket is the basic place to start major consideration into balance of weight, hinge points and where hydraulics are mounded
thank you for the reply.. is there any predifined methodology of calculation?
how to start off the design? start from the bottom, work your way up. you want your excavator to be balanced, e.g. can pick up a heavy load without tipping over
Are you planning on designing from scratch? That would take a big team of people. Figure out how much WORK your excavator will need to do. work as in how much weight it will need to lift. how fast do you want everything to move. find out how much energy how will require. then you can design the size of the pump, which will require a certain sized engine. then you design the fabrication to suit the cab, engine and pump. well, you get the point.
well i would try and get a hold of plans from another company first and study the hell out of them to see what you could learn from them komatsu and hitachi will sell you there older models from some dollars. because frankly building one from the ground up as Huntoon said that is a mammoth task you are taking on. Also think about where it is going to work is it going to be for local use in india or for export ? because you might have to change running gear and lot of things to suit this.
Not quite sure what the question here is, excavator design has not changed for decades. Improvements to the basic design have been made through trial and error but to design one to compete against established machine manufacturers is going to be a hard task. The most important thing from my point of view is a strong, reliable machine in a small package, perhaps to explain this, think of it as a modern 20 tonne machine that is capable of doing the work an older 30 tonne machine used to be able to do. To achieve this the metals are stronger but lighter, the hydraulics are stronger and cycle time has been speed up.

thank you for responses.. From the opinions given, how about going into the designing of an excavator, by conducting a survey for excavator models from different manufacturers and setting the target specifications and then starting the design. than these dimensions can be optimised. Need suggestions
Well, that *might* work, but I would highly advise you understand the engineering first.
