My '75 model 4500 has extremely slow hydraulics on the hoe and loader I know their is some water in the hyd system that I can't seem to get all out. Also it sounds like the pump is squalking or squealing in all but the swing function. Is their anything short of a new pump that might help? Can the pump be rebuilt? I can't seem to locate a re-build kit for it. Would a hyd flush help? Thanks in advance!:usa
suction line to the pump had strainer.....probably full of packing from hyd gylinders
What is the name on the pump? Some times a hydraulic rebuild shop can fix you up with out the OEM expense. Most OEM don't build their own pumps, they buy what meets their GPMs and is available at the time they are building the machines. You might also check the main relief for foriegn material in it. kYou might have to plum in a PSI gauge to find where oil is by passing. Sometime pump noise is mistaken for relief valve noise.
I'm working on memory, but I'm thinking the older Fords used an aluminum housing Cessna gear pump. Once you get a little wear on the shaft bearings and the gears start wearing into the aluminum pump housing, pump is pretty much done and requires replacement. I agree with jimg984, the older Fords used seals in cylinders that had a tendency to clog tank strainer with a sort of lint. That will make a pump make all sorts of noises, and ultimately destroy the pump.
Is your oil getting hot real quick? If not it might just be the strainer. Remove the bolt in the middle of the filter housing in the top of the radiator shell in front of radiator, then get yourself a patented Atcoequip Suck Bucket and drain the reservoir. the strainer bolts in to the bottom and can be washed out, if you're lucky that will be it. Also, clean the power steering strainer while you're in there. Atco is right, it is an aluminmum Cessna pump, they are supposed to be rebuildable but usually when it gets bad it's not worth it. Check with a hydraulics shop for parts or a pump.
Thanks for all the good info guys! This should keep me busy this weekend lol! Where would the strainer be? I'm still a bit confused.....nothing new:beatsme Is it part of the pump or somewhere else in the system? Thanks again:usa
See the post above, the strainer is inside the tank under the filter in front of the radiator. The strainer is on the piece that the big hose going to the pump is attached to. You should also replace the big filter while you have it out, and if you don,t have a power steering reservoir on the left side of engine, it draws from this tank also with a seperate little strainer, which probably needs cleaning too.
Thanks, Mitch504. Very good info for this newbie! You make it sound a bit less complicated.
I think that both screens have O ring seals that will need to be replaced when you clean the screens and the main hydraulic line needs a gasket (4 bolt holes). The screens in my 4500 were plugged solid with hose crap. Probably never cleaned in 40+ years!
You can remove all the milky hydraulic fluid by draining each side of the frame storage area and the front storage tank below the filter. You may need to remove a hose or two on the right side next to the frame(lowest point) to remove the last of the water logged hydraulic fluid. Then you need to locate were the water got into your system and fix it. The two most likely spots to get water in the hydraulic fluid is the vent filter in the fill cap or a swing cylinder cross over hose malfunction.
