Hi i have a Ford A 64 with an Allison TT22221-1 Trans in it. My problem is there is almost no power in the 2nd gear, Its like the clutch or torque converter is slipping or not working. In first gear, pushing into a snow pile it seems to have power, but when you put it in second and hit a hill the machine almost comes to a stop and the engine doesnt bog down at all. Can anybody tell me where the pressure test ports on the trans are so i can hook a gauge up to it, and if anybody has ever had problems like this and also where i could download a service manual? Thanks so much for your time. Scott in Ottawa Canada
Trans issues There is several posts on here in the wheel loader section w20, w24B, W24C that use the TT trans and have some info. The Ford should be close in the repair also. You will need to make a chart to help you out for testing. position of control lever clutch pressure pressure out of the torque converter low idle 1800 rpm low idle 1800rpm 1. N a. psi b. psi c. psi d. psi 2. F a. psi b. psi c. psi d. psi 3. H a. psi b. psi c. psi d. psi 4. R a. psi b. psi c. psi d. psi Trans oil temp must be at 140-165 Clutch pressure 138-165 psi Pressure out of the torque converter 35-65 psi Looking at the rt side of machine standing at the rear, the control valve for the trans is mounted to the side of the trans. The lt hand side of the valve facing it, above the shift spool bottom, the next plug up should have a test plug in the rear plug and that is for checking pressure of the clutches. Above the valve there is two ports that may have tubes that run to the cooler, reach to the engine side of the trans case where the converter housing bolts to the trans case, there should be a 3/4 plug or a temp switch/with wire screwed in, that is your pressure out test port. With two gauges hooked up you can run your pressures, mark one gauge so you don't get your readings wrong. A and B test on the one gauge and C and D on the other. You will need to check the ford spec on the rpm, it should be around the same and also the pressure /converter out spec. Your machine may have test ports from the factory also but this should be the same area for testing that they run to. Brakes need to work to hold machine while testing, need to check some machines have a cut out that will not let trans move if parking brake is engaged. May be other members that may have a S/M for you machine that can confirm engine speed and pressures. May be able to give more info when tests are done and you know the pressures, would not go in it until reading are done, most of all be careful while testing. And one more thought check linkage for wear to be sure it's going fully into detent when in high range.
Hey Sheepfoot, thanks for the great info. When i did my pressure checks i was about ten pounds lower in hi range than all others. My converter pressure was good. I have since removed the trans from the machine and have it apart in the shop. Its in great shape except for some clutches are a bit eroded. The only thing i could find was that my hi range piston fell out of the boar with no effort when i was dismantling it. Maybe it was leaking past? Im installing all new clutches and plates and a complete seal kit. I guess we will see what will happen! Thanks again!!!!
So Greerco, what did you find? I know this is years later but you never responded with findings on the transmission.. I'm experiencing the same on my IH3800 twin disk transmission and looking for information.
