Fuel pump

buddie ยท 2014-06-15 15:24

I finally got my excavator to remain running with a new non-electric fuel pump on my Cummings 6B engine, low hours and about 6 yrs. old. Fuel pump runs off the engine cam. It ran good for 2 days, now it is doing the same thing as before, shutting off when you accelerate. It will idle indefinitely. Is it likely that I purchased a bad fuel pump as the same problem exist, will not remain running. Anyone with that experience? Many thanks. Regards, Buddie

Replace all the fuel hoses from the lift pump to the fuel tank, could be your sucking air, also replace the return line from the inj pump to the fuel tank tank.

Not likely, but it's possible that it failed that fast. What kind of injection pump/system do you have? In your other post, you mentioned bypassing with a hose, was that hose run to a temporary tank, or the original tank? Have you drained the tank and checked the inside? A pressure gauge right before the injection pump will tell you pretty quick whether your problem is upstream or downstream.

Thanks, I will try that tomorrow. Buddie

How much pressure do we need from the fuel pump to the injection pump?

Is this engine a common rail system or HP injection pump & lines..? If it's common rail you might be looking at something as high as 100psi, if it's a HP injection pump probably round about 60psi.

If its a manual pump it could be as low as 10 psi, would be nice to know all the machine/engine numbers.

    A 6B5.9 should be 25psi minimum.

    CAV DPA> 1-3psi Bosch VE> 5psi Bosch Inline pump> 25psi min.
