Fuse questions

rumblecloud · 2023-05-01 16:12

On my 555E there are two "bi-metal fuses that are auto-resetting." One for the rear wiper motor and one for the front wiper motor. My questions are : 1. Why are they auto-resetting? and 2. Can they be replaced with a normal non-resetting fuse of the same rating? They are both 10A. Thanks R

My guess is that they are auto resetting because you have a short in a wire somewhere or a bad ground. If you put in a normal fuse it’s just going to blow.

So the previous owner/operator, rather than finding the fault, just replaced the normal fuse with an auto reset type....hmhmmmh. I thought maybe there was some reason NH would install them as standard. That would explain why the front wiper would work sometimes and sometimes not. The back wiper motor runs fine so far. So I'll need to drop the headliner to check for shorts or bad connection in the roof harness Thanks Cos. R

Found this in the Troubleshooting section of the repair manual. Nevertheless, with or without a working auto-rest fuse or a normal fuse, the front motor isn't working. So, since I have seen the motor work, I'm going for number 3... Front and rear wiper motors inoperative 1. Fuse tripped 1. Wait for fuse to automatically reset 2. Defective 2. Repair or replace 3. Loose or broken wiring 3. Repair

Most of those fuses are used as they do not cut off in 1/2 a second like ATO Fuses do. Especially useful for when the start up current of a fan is more than the fuse is rated for, for 3 Seconds before the current drops down lower than the fuse limit while running normally. Simon C

Thanks for the explanation Simon. Makes perfect sense. And both the auto-reset fuses were on the wiper motors. I've just never seen them before.

Look at the asterix in the fuse illustration in your manual. The single asterix indicates those are auto reset circuit breakers from the factory.

Bi-metal resetting fuse. Probably cheaper than a circuit breaker.

If they're from the factory, then they might have used them on the wipers in case you turn the wipers on when they're frozen to the glass. Hopefully the fuse last long enough for the glass to warm up enough or repeatedly jerk the wipers loose and run without replacing a fuse.
