Galion graders

Galion is a name now confined to the history books, but the company provided a number of innovations during the early development of the motor grader. Here's a great article on the history of the Galion motor grader: http://www.contrafedpublishing.co.nz/Historical/Grading+through+history.html The picture below is of a T-500 at work on a Pennsylvania rural road rebuild project in 1956.

Photographed in 1971, here's a Galion T-400 engaged in some berm and ditching work. Note how easy hydraulics make positioning the blade, with all functions set from the operator's seat. In a mechanical control machine, setting the blade up for this kind of work could take several minutes and more than a little physical effort of the operator's part.

Great pictures and link. I operated a Galion many many years ago. Just briefly though. You're right about mechanical high lift as I've been there and done that.

I worked for a comapny that had one like the first pic. Started on gas, swapped to diesel once it got hot. Restarting it if it stalled was a bear. Neat old rig, just wore away to nothing and they just junked it last month after sitting for 10 years. Neat old machine.

We are using a Galion 870, been happy with it. only problem we have had so far is the the solenoid for the parking break went. After replacing it the PB light wont shut off and the trans wont engage. I can feel the brake releasing and engaging in the junction block but the light wont go off and it a fly by wire system. if i unplug the high pressure switch the light goes out and machine will move. any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Does anyone have any information or literature on the Galion/wakefield 603 motorgrader that was manufactured in Great Britain?
