Galion w/ cummins surging

Pipevine ยท 2019-03-01 16:28

Started up the grader today (66 Galion 104b with cummins jnr100). Engine would surge sporadically. At first I had throttle response but after 15 or 20 min it quit responding to throttle and idled way down shortly thereafter and then died. Anyone have any ideas/ suggestions?

It is running out of fuel check for fuel flow out of tank, check float tank to make sure fuel is going thru when float is lowered, check fuel filters

The supply pump/gear pump is built into the pump.. IDK if they have a helper pump from the tank UP TO the inj. pump.?? There is a filter in that pump.. its under the big round disk lookin deal w/a screwdriver slot.. DO NOT attempt to "check it".. without the proper gaskets/orings that go underneath the screw head.. Its a 1x deal.. & u HAVE TO knock the **** outta it w/ a brass drift & hammer inorder to get it loose enough to turn.. My suggestion would be to get a HAND impact driver w/ a WIDE bit.. only after knockin the crap outta it several times.. Good luck..

they have a float tank between the tank and pump I have had to pull it apart and clean it. Do not run without the float tank fuel will gravity feed into the engine filing up the cylinders and crank case with fuel when not running

On the back of the pump, next to #10 inlet fitting should be a square/rectangle piece with 4 screws. That is your pulse damper. Inside there is a simple disc that acts as an accumulator on the plus side of the lift pump. I have seen cracked discs cause all kinds of shenanigans . Check fuel supply hose for obstructions, this means pull the hose off and try to draw through it. If you can't, the pump is gonna struggle. Check the line for any skipped or hidden fuel filters, slurry bowls etc. Maybe even pull standpipe from tank, see if there is junk jammed up at first elbow fitting. Did this come on suddenly? Was the machine sitting for a year or more? What kind of smoke do you have? Look at your intake, closest to inlet. Is there a fuel line with wires going to a nipple, you may have a flame start. These cause all kinds of starting, running issues. Anything deeper, you're gonna be in pumpguys territory.

Problem was fuel filter. Have new one on order. If I could figure out how I'd post a Pic of the old one. Wow, don't know how it ran at all. Hadn't changed it since I got the machine bc was trying to make sense of the setup, aftermarket spin on filter head, no float tank, hydraulic spin on filter on the aforementioned head, etc. All this left me scratching my head think I've got it figured out now tho
