Gehl 4835 turbo, chugging, no throttle response

mack_chamb ยท 2015-11-11 10:05

My gehl skidsteer will start and sit at a very low idle and lope. When I press the throttle nothing happens. If I give it a squirt of ether it revs up and almost die's. Also the smoke it blows at idle it black dots that stick to your hand. Any ideas?

Black dots is probably raw fuel that is flooding the cylinders... bad injector or low compression or timing off, etc

If it's wet stacking bad, and loping with no response, something is causing it to not burn the fuel. Did it just randomly start doing this? Without knowing any specifics of that engine, start with the simple stuff. Plugged filters or fuel pickups can cause those symptoms as can bad fuel in general. If there is a fuel transfer pump, make sure it is working properly. If any lines are under vacuum make sure they do not have leaks. Check for excessive blowby. Bad piston or rings can cause low compression and a lot of blowby. Check compression. Bent rod or a valve issue can cause low compression without blowby. If all of that is good, you could pull the injectors and have them tested. If they are good, then get the pumped checked. Depending on the setup of that engine it may or may not be likely the timing got messed up on its own somehow, but you could verify it. You could also double check the turbo as blown seals could cause the wet stacking but usually not the loping.
