Is there anyway to bypass the safety features to let the boom be fully extended horizontial at ground level ? Thanks for any help...

And you want to do this...why? I haven't been around a Genie 125, but on every machine 100 ft and bigger that I've worked on, you can't fully extend at horizontal because it will tip over. I'd say the Genie 125 is no different.

no when you have the boom horizontal on the ground. a 125 has to be almost vertical upright to go 125' extended, right now the it will only go out 80' unless there is some safety bypass. I would like to inspect it with the boom all the way out on the ground..

Ah, I see. Your talking about having the basket on the ground supporting the weight to prevent the machine from tipping with it fully extended, right? I've done this on JLG 110's before to paint the boom entirely. Instead of basket on ground, I support the basket with forklift and allow forklift to roll while telescoping the boom out, this after disabling the boom length sensor. Even then you have to be very careful doing this. You can easily stress or break the retract cables (or chains depending on machine) when you go to telescope in fully extended at or below horizontal. I'm not familiar with the Genie devices so can't give you much advice about them.

Thanks but I will try genie and see if one of techs will offer up some help.

Genie's use a series of switches on top of the boom. Some of them were wiper switches with a roller and others were proximity switches. You can remove the plate and will have to gain access. There are also switches on the side of the boom IIRC, JJ

If you open the hood @ the ground controls there is a second ignition switch. If you turn that switch to another position does it not over ride the basket controls to allow full extension of the boom?

Genie will tell you that you can not extend the boom all the way out with it down. Take a look at the thickness of the boom sections, the days of the overbuilt machines (ie: 110sx, pro126) are over. There is a way to do it with the limit switches at the top of the boom, but the boom flex WILL oil can the sides of the fly boom. Bobby

What that switch allows you to do is raise the boom up past horizontal without the axles extended. If you are wanting to paint the boom I would get another lift and do it with it raised. JJ

The Genie 80 actually has a longer horizontal reach than the 125. We did a side by side test.

Please dont do that!!! you will most probably bend the boom sections, or tip the machine. They build these machines to a 1.5 times safety factor so that doesnt leave much room to do anything outside the load charts for these machines

The Genie 120 Boom uses a set of proximity switches that keep it within an envelope when lowering the boom at full extension. The safe (simple) way to extend if you are wanting to paint the boom is to get another boom and paint with the machine vertical. Otherwise, you will been to disconnect the chains and section the boom out one at a time. This is very time-consuming and takes a very trained mechanic. You can overide the proximity switches but risk the chance of stress or failure to the boom sections. This failure could happen later down the road and is not worth it. Btw....Of you own this machine, these proximity switches have to be calibrated often to keep the machine within the envelope. The procedures for checking the machine are in the service manual and this should be done on a regular maintenance schedule. It doesn't take the boom extending more than another 10 ft or so when lowering and when the machine locks out, the back tires will come off the ground from the shock and leverage. You DO NOT want to be in the basket when this happens. Please treat that machine with respect.

We have a Snorkel tb126j that we painted. We used our crane with the man basket and extended the lift all the way vertical as the last post said to do. Sounds chinsy but we actually rolled the paint on the areas where the boom wouldnt extend while spraying. Turned out good and nobody has ever known the difference. Feel glad that you have the Genie, that Snorkel has the EMS system and is a pain in the *ss!!!!!
