That should be a interesting job. What type of grinder are you using? I’m thinking a tub grinder. Are all the spikes and tie plates off all the ties? Or do you have to check for them as you load?

we have a Peterson Pacific Model HC-2400 i works great its been modifed over the years stronger clutch extra teeth on the drum i will get some pictures this week . i spent the last couple of days going though some of the pile but it seems they,ve done a better job this time removing the tie plates and spikes only found a few so far !!!

Looks like a fun job. I will be looking forward to the updates.

This looks like one of these projects that will be fun for a day or two but after the 1000th scoop of ties you will be getting bored. However that can be how alot of projects like this are, we are stripping quarries right now and 200+ haul truck loads a day, my arms are tired from digging so much. Thanks Trbo

couldnt you had sold the tie's and made a little extra money? or save them for little projects around the house? maybe even make some mud mats like chris had? :beatsme

You could have put a free sign on them here they would have been gone in a week. there was a pile here about 2 years ago that had a sign on them ...FREE... it was about 300 ft long 6 to 8 feet tall. after a week the only thing left was splinters.. I think they sell for about 8 bucks around here usually...

Are you grinding the tie for biomass?

  13. #13Deereman2010-01-11 20:44

Nice looking hoe you have there. Just imagine if you could steal a self leveler off of a 959K. That would be one hell of a machine!!

  14. #14tyler5652@yahoo2010-01-11 21:36

yeah i believe they sell for about $8-13 here too, would have been quite a bit of spending money even if you sold them for a fraction of that. like you said even if you gave them away for free you could still benfit by eliminating landfill cost guessing that they went there?

  15. #15Copenhagen2010-01-11 23:24

12,000 ties in two weeks? You had better quit taking pictures and get to grinding!

  16. #16HeyUvaVT2010-01-12 20:46

    they would sell for $14 a piece here x12,000 = $168,000

  17. #17Dirtman20072010-01-12 21:11

Or you could do it the dirtman style and set them on fire:drinkup

so job took 3 weeks as usual they shipped me out for a week and stuck a seat filler there so not much was done .just my plans turned upside down as usual . In BC as far as i,ve been told they cant be used because environmental reasons .so i grind them up and a trucking company trucks them down to Everett WA it gets burned as hog fuel i think !!!!

  19. #19tyler5652@yahoo2010-01-13 02:21

damn i could think of a lot of different things to do with that much money, even to sell them for a fraction of that i would be happy lol. and what they didnt know would'nt hurt them lol.

  20. #20HeyUvaVT2010-01-13 20:26

lol chris i always knew you liked to burn money!

Calling Expatracer you mention your peterson pacific grinder was modified. i was wondering what all you changed on your grinder. We recently bought an early hc2400 with a 330 hp m11 cummins. we are putting on a 500 hp series 60 detroit. I just wanted to ask you 20 questions about your machine to try to get ahead of the curve on this project. Thanks Ethan
