I'd check the electrical continuity of the grid heater (no continuity means that the grid heater heating element has failed). If that's OK, good continuity, I'd check that the grid heater relay works; that there is electrical output to the grid heater wire. I don't know about 580's, but some Cummins/Case CDC engine gird heater relays have latching solenoid and timer circuits that won't work if the grid heater element has failed and has no electrical continuity.

An overheated connection can loosen enough to cause no continuity. That's a lot of amps and can overheat a loose connection quickly.

Very good point. I remember puzzling over a no-start Case tractor. There was a 10 gauge jumper wire between the starter solenoid and the syncro-start pull-coil solenoid that looked perfect, factory wire with ring terminals crimped at each end of the wire. The jumper wire looked perfect but it had *no* electrical continuity. One of the ring terminal crimps was infinitesimally loose, and oil covered. No sign of heat, just no electrical continuity.

thanks for the replys. i cleaned all the connections up and it started working normally again. just this past week i went to start it and the light goes out within a couple of seconds when i turn the key on.
