I have a 07 Cat 324 DL with 1000 hr, purchased at 600 hr, that turns over forever whether its cold or hot, seems to lose fuel pressure, have replaced a pressure regulator on the fuel filter assembly, Thanks for any help

. Hawkeye, take a look at what i had last year, might be of some help.

Thanks for the reply, my machine does this cold or warm, and always starts after about 2 min of cranking, think this could be the same problem? Thanks

As it turned out mine ended up not wanting to start in cold or warn. You should start by changing all 3 fuel filters and draining the end of your tank, sounds like it spent a lot of time idle and it could just be rust in the system. As you can see from my tread, before deciding to changing the pump, you should check the injectors and the pressure relief valve. Also the CAT ET diagnostic is a big help.

To check the relief, run the engine with the plastic hose removed. it should not be spraying fuel out of the relief. With ET you will probably see the desired and actual fuel pressures way off. Now this is most likely the injectors or the pump or both. With ET you can run a cut out test but it may not run due to the fuel pressure getting too far apart. Then you can run the rough running engine cut out test. This will show if you have a bad injector. If not then they could all be equally worn out. A leak off test should be done. 30ml or more is too much. around 60ml and it wont start. I just did one and it was 110ml, started on ether then it ran ok. Cat has issues with the common rail injectors. I have done 4 sets in the last 4 weeks on different machines. Talk to your dealer and see if they will help due to the low hours.

This is not an common rail engine, the 324D has a C7 with HEUI system. The first thing is to check the relief valve at the back end of the head, it has a tiny oring that always breaks and then the fuel drains from the head back to tank. If you hand prime it for a while before starting and it makes a difference this is the culprit. take it apart and you'll most likely find the broken oring inside in the screen. It could also be the shaft seal on the heiupump that is bad so the oil drains from the pumps housing when it sits overnight, then it can't build pressure until the engine oilpump has filled the housing back up, easy to spot if the actual and desired actuation pressure is monitored while attempting to start. A more hands on approach is to remove the tube from the block to the heuipump and filling the pump up with oil before starting, if it starts easier then you'll know this is the isue.

Ah, thats why i use serial prefix's not years. Too many machines with too many combinations to remember.

Hawkeye, You need to get the scan tool on this the to check actuation pressure while cranking. It's going to be the easiest thing to do, they can look at what the sensor is reading with the engine off and while cranking. Actuation pressure sensors can cause issues with faulty readings, like reading higher than actual pressures. Scan tool is the best way, I've troubleshooted a few with a mechanical gauge, but it doesn't tell you what the ECM is seeing pressure wise. Good luck with it..
