Heavy Equipment Rodeo Ideas?

DuraMaxMan66 ยท 2008-08-26 21:15

I need ideas for my college equipment rodeo we have every year. Our challenges are getting old and the other competitors are getting too "comfortable" with having the same ones to come to every year :ban. I need ideas for Backhoe, Wheel loader, Excavator, and Skid Steer. Any suggestions on challenges you guys have seen or performed would be helpful. Thanks.

What contests do you have now that are worn out?

  2. #2pushcat2008-08-26 21:27

You could scoop up a basketball with a skidloader and "shoot" it into a 30 gallon barrel.

The classic egg and spoon into a pipe with a backhoe. Putting 2 tennis balls attached to 2 diff length strings into 2 evenly spaced pipe cups with a backhoe. Knocking tennis balls off highway cones spaced diff distances with a special tooth marked on an excavator. Picking up pieces of pipe with a hook and chain attached to a skid steer bucket and putting them in the right holes depending on the size of pipe. And the last one is tennis balls hanging from strings on the ends of a wheel loader bucket and dropping them into 2 even spaced pipe cups.

I guess we can start with the soft balls, 3 of them sitting on top of traffic cones. The object was to pull the balls off of the cone without tipping the cone over. The softballs had to come towards the machine. I guess I should add that these were all timed events. You were penalized for knocking the ball away from the machine,as well as for knocking the cone over. Next was with the bowling ball. The ball had a eye bolt through the center ,and was hanging on a chain, that was welded to a tooth on the bucket. They had 3 bowling pins set out and it was kind of the same deal as with the softballs. Bring them to the machine not away. On this challenge, the ball could not touch the ground. The golf ball was a little different. We had a small pile of sand next to a outrigger, with 2 golfballs setting on the pile. The bucket had a piece of pipe welded on that a golfball would just fit inside of. At about the 2 o'clock position there was a piece of approximately 8 inch pipe sitting about a foot out of the ground. This piece was out just about as far as the machine would reach, with the bucket curled in. The object was to put the ball in the pipe as fast as you could(they gave you 2 tries only had to get 1). All of these had a starting point that was painted on the ground, clock started when the bucket left the ground and stopped when it hit the ground in the starting circle. Hope this helps, if it doesn't make sense,I can try to draw pictures if you are interested. Good luck!!!!!!!! Heath ps I was 14 when I did this and finished in 3rd:drinkup

Balance a cup of water on the fork tip of a skid steer, run an obstacle course. DQ'ed if you spill any water. Fastest time wins.

Thanks Heath, I heard that we had a challenge similar with the bowling ball and pins and well....the bowling ball met the pavement one too many times so you can guess how that ended up for the pavement and the bowling ball. I like the idea with the golf balls and the pipe tho....Im going to bring that up. All of our contests are the same way....time starts when the machine moves or bucket is off the ground and time stops when bucket is back in certain spot.

An event I won one time in a rodeo was a soda can attatched to a platform. The fastest time to pop the pop top and open the can without crushing it. Also in the skid steer obstacle course, there was a section where you had to pick up tires with a 4/in/1 bucket and drop them over a post. The height of the post was just below the top height of the boom.

make a maze that has wire for the edges. make the "paths" in the maze ...lets say 3-6 inch's wide, connect one electric tester lead to the bucket and the other lead to the maze wire system and who ever runs the maze the fastest with out setting off the buzzer wins. Might take some time to set up but what the heck it would be a challenge. It doesnt even have to be a maze it could just be a twisty 10' path.

add idea ! Set a parked telehandler with bucket attached with tele extended and bucket 12"-18" above ground. Now use a mini digger to load the bucket on the telehandler till it tips. Skidsteer with pallet forks, pic & carry a pallet with road cone and football atop. tip football into dustbin. Make course as long or short as you wish with as many changes of direction as you wish. :drinkup Place rings over poles with a toothed backhoe bucket. Make rings and poles big or small as you wish. If you've got a brave model and access to a rehandling grab you could copy the guy that undressed the young lady on Y Tub

I know bobcat did this at their rodeo, how about you attach a paint brush on a excavator and have them paint their name. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QjmZle6-Qs

nuttin we get alot of penn teckers at allan myers and most of them are pretty darn good guys. theirs a differance between guys who want to operate . and guys just doing it for the money.

Haha, that parking lot's taken a beating over the years. Those high schoolers from NY learn on all JD (backhoe) controls, and this one young lady got on the 315 and paniced when she realized she wasn't comfortable with Cat controls and tried to remove a part of the parking lot instead of knocking the tennis ball off the cone:Banghead Everybody's a critic:stirthepot JK hoeman, Most of you non-Techers are nice guys yourselves, in fact I'd say just about everyone I've worked with have been stand-up guys, no matter where they came from:usa:drinkup

The rodeo sounds like a pretty good learning experience, but the real test is holding a job in the "real world" doing something like fine grading a road with a dozer or grader while the paving crew is right on your butt, or digging in a city street working around existing utilities.
