Apparently a fuel transport driver got mixed up at a conenience store south of us and dumped a load of gasoline in a underground diesel tank. He left and customers filled their tanks unknowingly. The problem was not discovered until the store had a parking lot full of diesel pickups that died. The confusing part was thoes that just topped off their tanks drove off. The ones that filled up empty tanks did not make it out of the lot. Wrecker business was good that day as the nearest dealer is 25 miles away.
Not so confusing if you consider that the ones that topped off got only a small fraction of a tankful of gas, but those that filled empty tanks got a much greater portion. Must've been an expensive mistake for that driver by the time it was all said and done...
I bet those trucks that left the station had some extra power!
Im sure the tanker driver is out of a job!
The distributor is going to poney up from what I hear. As they should.
Just the opposite. Diesel fuel has more energy than gasoline. Gasoline is 124,000 BTU's per gallon. versus diesel at 147,000 BTU's per gallon. So it takes a greater volume of gasoline to equal one unit of diesel fuel. Nonetheless it would cause havoc with all the trucks that filled up with it. Can you imagine what it did to the injection pumps on some of those trucks, especially the pumps that use the diesel as a lubricant.
We had a FF put 25 gallons of gas in a Cat 3208 powered fire truck. Checked with the diesel shop, they said dump the power service to it and run it. All it was lacking by having gas in the tank was lube for the pump, the gas itself would burn ok, or at least enough to run it till the gas was burned out. Didn't seen to have bothered it any.
